In the picture the first thing i saw was a skull and then the second thing i saw was a lady looking in the mirror sitting at her vanity. I dont think a girl would see different first then what a boy saw just because of a different sex. It depends on the person whether boy on girl what they first saw.

When I looked at the picture, i saw at first a white skull. As I was still looking I then saw a woman who was siting in a chair, looking at herself in the mirror. So my prediction to that is that i think most male and females would have saw a skull first as well. I really don't think it matters if u r a male or a female. I still think most would have saw a skull first, then the woman. Then again there are other people that would have thought different.

Like if your into dark stuff then you will see something that is more scary and if your into more non scary stuff then you'll see somthing that isn't as scary as the other person will see. When I first saw the picture i saw a skeleton skull. Later on I saw a women sitting in a vanity, like doing her make-up. In my opinion a male would have have seen two women talking face to face. While a female would have seen just one women doing her make-up in a vanity table. So, yes , I feel both genders would have view the picture differently.

When I looked at picture at first for few seconds. I saw a skull and a woman in its own eye. But she sat front in the mirror and thought something in her mind. It was her fear about death.

I had to look at it again. This time I had a chance to look at it clearly and thoughts more. I saw something about a woman sat on the chair and it was a vainity. She looked at the mirror and had her hands held each others. She wanted to think about something or tried to be vain in someways.

When I first loked ay the picture "All is Vanity " , I seen a skull. When I took a closer look I saw a women sitting in front of her vanity. She was staring at her reflection and sitting in front of makeup."Question" could this picture be tied in with some type of psychology? Reverse?I predict that the boys would have seen women first. I think this because men are always looking for women.If it was in the reverse I think that women would have seen men first too.

When i first looked at the picture I saw a women from around the 1800's in her early thirty's sitting in front of a mirror looking at herself, then after a while i disturbingly noticed the skull after a few minutes. At first i saw a skull's big head and the skull is smoking a cigarette or something, because somthing is in the mouth of the skull. Later I saw a women sitting on a chair looking through a vanity mirror. She was looking at her own refelection. I also then saw a ship's shadow in the back-ground. I saw candles & bottles on the vanity . In the end i looked very closely and saw a little creature in the mirror at the bottom right corner!!

At first I saw the reflection of a woman in a mirror with makeup, cloth hanging from a vanity and the moon in the background. Then I saw a skull. I don't think tthere would be a difference at first between what a male or female would see, but I think females would see more detail after a while. I think females have tendencies to pick certain litle things out that males don't always see or pick up.

I feel that most men would see the skull first. they tend to think in a more basic manner. what they see at first glance is what they see. Females would see the women sitting at the tablefirst. Women tend to think in a more complex way. They look in to things in a deeper way.

At first glace I saw a woman, she was looking in a mirror. She was at her vanity probably doing her make-up. At second glace, it seemed to resemble a skull, i believe this is what the woman sees when she looks in the mirrior. While we see her real reflection. I believe that a man would see a skull at first because most men do not take interest in woman puting on make-up. I believe that either gender will see what they are more interested in.

AT first when i seen the picture to me it looked like a woman with a ugly white skeleton with a white skull. the woman was looking at herself in the mirror of the skull she is observing herself she sees a reflection of herself she is just looking.and later when i looked at the picture i noticed something different the skull kind of looked like a tablecloth halfway covering the table . it look like the woman was making something or putting some indgrient in the bottles she had a long white stick in her hand. I think a woman would have seen a woman first, and a skull second; a man would see the skull first. The woman would also see much more detail.

I think that neither gender sees anything first. One gender may see something first but the other gender will eventually see the same thing. I think there is no difference , it doesnt matter what gender you are!!!

When I frist saw the picture i saw a white skelton skull .Now that i really looked in the picture i saw a women in the mid 1800's sitting in a vanity possibly fixing her or putting make-up on ; now that i look in even deeper i see a women thinking , really concerned about something. I believe that when male and female see this picture they will see the same thing i saw which was a skelton skull . no matter the sex i beleive that the very frist look will be the skull.

well the first thing that iv'e seen when i looked at the picture was a huge skull head smoking a cigarette , or something like that, then i seen a women sitting in a chair looking into the skulls head like it was a mirror. then i seen that the back round was dark and scarey looking, and then the women was sitting at the vanity with bottle of perfume i guess , and the vanity had candles on it , and then in the mirror ,on the side of the vanity there was there little monster in the corner , and then when u look it looks like it is a ship. well about the gender thing , i think if me and a guy would be sitting together , maybe we would be seeing different things at first then probley at the end we would both probley see the same , but maybe we would have two different views and maybe not see the same either way i guess. and reall the gender does not make a big difference at all.

The fist thing i saw when i looked at the picture, was a lady in a mirror, but the more i looked at it the more i saw. I saw the front of a shit, a skull with a object hanging out of his mouth<< like a a pipe>>,and i also saw to twins in the moon light. As i studied the picture more, i saw two ladies playing chest , out side with the moon behind them, while a little monster whatched over them........... With the gender issue i think that we all saw the pic in the same amount of time. i dont think it is your gender that makes a difference, but it is your IQ level. If anything makes a different it is your age..

Looks like most of us came up with interesting and very descriptive ideas about the picture we observed today. Especially liked the idea expressed by a few of you that it represented Paul Laurence Dunbar's "Mask" in some way, or that perhaps the two pictures are connected to one another by theme or subject. Your predictions and explanations were also very interesting and quite varied. Am looking forward to having more time in lab on Tuesday to explore this further, to look at some other visual displays, and to post additional comments.

I am also looking forward to Professor Grobstein's visit on Wednesday, March 14 to discuss gender issues, to learn a little about male and female brains, and to explore ideas about how we make sense of visual images. I had the privilege of attending a summer institute for teachers called Brain and Behavior where we studied some of these issues. We got to think hard and have fun at the same time, which is what I hope you will also experience here.

The first thing that I saw in the picture was the skull bone. Later I had seen a women looking into a mirror thinking about herself. I think that boys and girls see the same thing. It just take some people a littile bit longer to see. I think that boys will see the skull bone first then recognize the women later, but the girls would have seen the women looking into the mirror, then they would see the skull.

At first glance I saw a lady looking at her reflection in the huge skull. Later it looked as though she's adjusting the teeth of the skull which look like perfume bottles. The reflection of her head and her actual head form the holes in the skull for where the eyes would be. I think the idea of me trying to predict the thoughts of my peers and provide reasons for my assumptions is ridiculous. I have no type of study or facts for me to be able to make an "educate guess"; moreover, I do not even know why I have beheld what I've beheld, so how could I possibly read my friends' minds. I am but a student, not a psychic.
