I'm really grateful to both Sunshine and ndifrank for naming the nonvisible disabilities present and active in all our classrooms. Along these lines--and also to follow up on ndifrank's observation that we have been too focused on singular identities, not attending to the complex intersections of various ones--I wanted to share a classic piece by bell hooks, called "Confronting Class in the Classroom," which I think speaks to some of the concerns about classroom dynamics that we were exploring together on Tuesday.
