Instructions for Preparing your web portfolio for Schools in American Cities, Spring 2015
Due by 5 PM on Saturday, May 9 (for seniors)
12:30 PM on Friday, May 15 (for all others)
This process invites you to reflect on all the work you have done for this course, to chronicle what has happened in your evolution as a thinker, writer and speaker, and educator - to contribute to the evaluation of your work. Now you will
...log onto serendip:
*post your final field paper--this is your 4th web paper.
* In the bar across the top of the page you'll see "my portfolio."
Clicking on that will call up all your web postings. Please review these. As you do so, open, edit and (if you haven't done this already) tag each of your papers as "web paper."
* Ruminate for a while on what you notice as you revisit your whole semester's work.
* Then write a short (approx. 2 pp.) essay reflecting on where you were when we began this process, where you are now, and what's been happening in between. How and what have you been learning? Where do you think that the edges of your learning now lie? In what ways has your understanding of urban education been expanded, challenged, complexified? Where are your continuing concerns and questions?
Be descriptive and specific in this process, but also evaluative. Here are some prompts for thinking about your work in the course (you do not have to answer each question!).
** Review the checklist.
** Review your participation in our group work. How present and contributing have you been in our class discussions, both large and small? What roles have you assumed in our group dynamics, both on-line and in class? What can you say about the quality of your listening? How much of your class work was focused on your own learning, and in what ways have you been contributing to the learning of others?
** Consider your reading for the course: What were your pleasures and discoveries? your challenges? How did you grow as a reader and scholar, and where are your learning edges in the field of education?
**Review also your written work: How did you take up the assignments to post? In what ways did posting - and reading others' posts - contribute to your learning? What about your papers? What have you learned through your writing and thinking processes?
**What are you taking out of this class into your future academic work and/or life?
** Create a post for this reflective essay. Title it "Self Evaluation and Reflection," and also USE THE CHECK BOX TO TAG IT "SELF EVALUATION AND REFLECTION."
** Upload a banner image to illustrate a central theme of your portfolio. When you login, you will land on your My Account page. Open "edit," and scroll down to "Personal Banner for E-Portfolio," where you can make a selection to upload and caption.
** Refresh your browser, then check to make sure that your final paper, banner and self-evaluation have all shown up in your portfolio (which you can access again from the list along the top of the page).
Note that this means that your evaluation, as part of your portfolio, will be publicly available on the web (you can unclick the audience when you create or edit it, however, if you don't want it to show up in our ongoing online class conversation).
You should email me any comments that you do not want to be public.
** Complete the checklist and submit it electronically (this is the only part of the portfolio that will be private, readable only by Jody.)
