I would like to take a guess about the plot development when I have done the first few chapters. This story was not a exception.
But I failed on the very first step- to start my guess on it. Snipe said he would marry Billy on Friday, and then the author put a lot ink to elaborate the process how Billy and her family prepare for wedding. There was no hint, at least for me, that Snipe is married and Billy wanted to abort the baby so she needed money. Before that point, I was in confusion about why the Beedes would like to bother a passed relative.
However, when I found out the reason to get the body, I appreciated the author's clear logic hides behind the plots. That is, Teddy and June think about the treasure for years but Billy refuses to even mention about her mother; then Billy is in need of money to miscarry the baby, she has no choice but either to bear her baby or dig the treasure out. Her need meets the couple's need, but clash with Dill's selfishness. As a result, Billy steal Dill's truck and brought her uncle and aunt to El Juna, which also cause Dill to eagerly hide the secret and take back the truck, so she went with Laz to El Juna.
Among those people to El Juna, Laz is the person with a clean heart like a crystal. (Although I told Melinda this man was silly.) Every person was lured by the treasure to head to El Juna but only Laz is heading there for Billy. That should be described with a word more than sweetness.
My question I would like to ask is that if there is an original character for Billy. Billy is such a bright-colored character in this book. Though I don't agree with what she did, but her smartness, calmness, and unflappability knock me a lot.
