Although I'd never been there before, I felt very personally connected with the Norris Square Neighborhood Project gardening program. It was really moving for me to see many of my interests and experiences intersect in the programs and philosophies of the organization. Food access, and especially access to fresh and healthy produce, is one issue I've focused a lot on, so I was really excited to hear about how the produce grown in the urban gardens is sold in the park to community members for affordable prices. As our markets are expanding, I think it is increasingly valuable to recenter and think about how to ensure the strength of the local community. The community food organization I volunteered with in high school is not unlike the Norris Square community projects, and I think initiatives like these are primary examples of efforts to take back the economy and empower the community.
