In historic agreement, nations create the world's largest marine reserve in Antarctica - October 27
An international committee responsible for conservation of antarctic marine ecocystems agreed to preserve 600,000 square miles of the Ross Sea in Antarctica's Southern Ocean for the next 35 years. After weeks of debate, 24 nations and the E.U. reached consensus to establish the Ross Sea Marinee Protected Area, now the largest marine protected area in the world. This will protect the area from commercial fishing, overfishing, and pollution in order to preserve the pristine biodiversity of the marine ecosystem.
