One thing that seemed integral to the culture at camp Jened was the idea of disability as a horizontal identity. Multiple characters spoke of their journey of understanding at camp Jened and the understanding they gained of a collective sense of identity. Scenes such as when Steve translated what another person said when the group found her difficult to understand highlight the fact that such a community allows for inclusion of those who may typically be cast aside. Overall, camp Jened thoroughly demonstrated that pain and suffering are not intrinsic to disability and are instead a product of a hostile, isolating environment.
