Elio Frattaroli is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He lives and practices in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. He is in full-time private practice doing psychoanalysis and psychotherapy with adults, adolescents and couples. He is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, teaching both psychoanalytic candidates and psychotherapy students. Dr. Frattaroli studied Shakespeare at Harvard and trained with Bruno Bettelheim at the University of Chicago before turning to medicine. He has written and lectured on Shakespeare as well as on psychiatry and psychoanalysis. His book, Healing the Soul in the Age of the Brain, was first published by Viking on September 10, 2001. Paul Grobstein is Eleanor A. Bliss Professor of Biology and Director of the Center for Science in Society at Bryn Mawr College. An experimental neuroscientist, Grobstein also has a long-standing interest in human behavior reflecting his engagements as a parent, educator, and social activist, and was an Academic Fellow of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. Grobstein is also a co-founder of the Serendip website, "a gathering place for people who suspect that life's instructions are always ambiguous and incomplete" (http://serendipstudio.org).
Bruce Levin is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Plymouth Meeting, and chair of the Department of Psychoanalytic Fellowship at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. In this capacity, has played an important role in inviting and encouraging both clinicians and academicians to apply psychoanalytic thinking to their own fields and interests. As a result of these activities, the Psychoanalytic Center has a specialized educational niche which welcomes those who may not be interested in formal training but have an active interest in and curiousity about psychoanalytic ideas and thought. Levin is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Institute and Psychotherapy Program at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia and enjoys teaching both candidates and psychotherapy students.
Susan S, Levine is in the private practice of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and clinical supervision in Penn Valley and Philadelphia and is a member of the faculty of the Institute of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. A graduate of the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College and of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, she is an Editorial Associate at the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and is the author of Useful Servants: Psychodynamic Approaches to Clinical Practice (Aronson, 1996). Her paper, "Beauty Treatment: the Aesthetics of the Psychoanalytic Process" will appear in the October issue of Psychoanalytic Quarterly; and "To Have and to Hold: On the Experience of Having an Other" will be published in an upcoming issue.
Sydney Pulver is a training and supervising analyst of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. The recommended reading derives from Pulver's Plenary Address to the American Psychoanalytic Association in New York in December 2001.
The Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research will provide two hours of continuing education credit for participation by interested social workers. An administrative fee of $10 will be required from those seeking credit; registration and payment can be made at the event. For futher information contact James Martin (jmartin@brynmawr.edu).
Two hours of continuing education credit are also available to physicians (CME) and psychologists (CE) through the Psychonanalytic Center of Philadelphia and the Alliance for Psychoanalytic Thought. Registration and payment of $10 administrative fee should be arranged in advance through the Alliance (610-617-4411).
The panel and open discussion will be held in Room 110 of the M. Carey Thomas Library, in the center of the Bryn Mawr campus (building number 18 on the campus map). Bryn Mawr is located near Route 30 about ten miles west of downtown Philadelphia (directions).
