On treading lightly?
I was tickled when Michael Zier pointed out to me that my hands now form part of the banner for the Center for Environmental Transformation. I was also struck by the contrast between their call--"join us in the work of treading more lightly on the earth and its resources"--and what was happening on my farm this week: in order to keep the cows out of the creek (good for local ecology: saves the banks, and keeps manure out of the water) we dug a new well. This is not exactly treading lightly....
Along these lines...
I also wanted to share an essay about the architect Shigeru Ban, “credited with challenging traditional notions of domestic space and what it means to have a roof over your head," and another, written by my daughter Marian, about questions of cultural appropriation: it describes her search to "live more lightly"--among people who are seeking a heavier tread.
