Mad at ILLC: Reading Nussbaum's Good Kings Bad Kings through Margaret Price
Margaret Price’s Mad at School looks into the ways academic spaces fail to include or support “neuroatypicality.” She looks not only into the traditionally assumed aspects of academia – writing papers, doing assignments, going to class – but also at spaces integral to success in academia but outside of that: “kairotic spaces.” She defines “kairotic space” as “less formal, often unnoticed, areas of academe where knowledge is produced and power is exchanged” (60) and describes it as characterized by things like a “real-time unfolding of events” and “impromptu communication that is required or encouraged” (61).

Laura Swanson’s photography plays with the history of portrait photography and disrupts the viewer’s expectations of how to interact with portrait photographs. To explore this, I look at two very different examples of her work: the first is part of her “Anti-Self-Portraits” series, and the second is part of her series of Bryn Mawr and Haverford students following her work on the two campuses two years ago. I argue that the different goals for each series and the different subject matter impact how each may be read, and highlight the ways photographic portraiture has been used to represent people.

Reflections
This semester has been undeniably difficult for me, in more ways than one. I came into this cluster with a lot of expectations, and despite my best efforts to put those expectations out of mind, I kept returning to them. Having taken a 360º before, having familiarity with Anne’s teaching style, having the privilege of age and experience as a senior all contributed to the expectations I had coming into this 360º – and when things were in fact very different from my expectations because of our own class dynamics, I wasn’t sure how to hold these two experiences together.
I realized in our meeting today that I came into this class with a lot of privilege around how I speak in the classroom. This is something I’ve thought about before; 360ºs have a way of bringing this privilege into light for me. Two years ago, I wrote:
