Intersubjectivity ... and Culture (loop 3) |
|
Culture and intersubjectivity are not parallel to individual stories but grow interactively out of them
|
|
- Intersubjectivity and culture provide an additional mechanism both for testing existing stories and for creating new ones
- Diversity is an asset, rather than a problem, for both processes but most particularly for the second
- Valuable transdisciplinary work includes
- Encouraging the development of new stories
- Comparing/contrasing conflicting stories without quickly dismissing any
- Noticing patterns across the stories of different disciplines
- Conceiving stories as yet unconceived and testing those
- Inquiry involves the somewhat unpredictable (and hence not fully "defensible") creation of new understandings based on comparisons of patterns perceived to date by different story tellers done in order to motivate new inquiries (rather than the determinate uncovering of properties and rules that are easily common to all individuals and will remain inviolate and add progressively to an asymptotic approach to "Truth" or "Reality")
- A commitment to "objectivity" makes sense in terms of a recognition of the advantages of collective discourse (rather than in terms of editing contributions to discourse).
