Yes, some researchers have argued that orangutans and chimpanzees (and humans from a certain age) have self-awareness. Such statements are based on the fact that they pass tests of mirror recognition in which they see in a mirror that their face has been smeared with red paint or chalk through recognizing the reflection as their own.
