Videography as a Pedogogical Tool

Let's begin by listing the uses of videos in the Classroom:

1.) demos of things that are dangerous, complicated, novel/introduction - the hook!

2.) visiting places virtually

3.) reinforcement in a different medium

4.) assessment or archiving

journaling in a different medium

student and student collaborative product, reflection, modeling

professional development

learning content

as tool for making observations over time.

tool for mentoring

distance learning

What are some of the pitfals and limitations?

1.) capturing unappropriate interaction? b/c it is out of context, unknown messages

2.) trademarks and legality

3.) virtual thus not real and not educational

4.) students mis-using/mis-interpreting

Some examples from TeacherTube and Wil's first YouTube Project or on Serendip

Online lectures a great source for Distance Learning

Among thousands of application of advanced IT technologies, one emerging and popular niche is "distance learning", one can find hundreds of websites offering purposeful distance learning, these online schools are really proving a great service to third world countries where education system is poor and people can't afford to go abroad for education.

Online videos being a basic constituent of distance learning but I don't really agree with disadvantages of recording lectures.

- capturing inappropriate interaction?

Recorded lectures can be edited before the final version is uploaded

- virtual thus not real and not educational

How education can be 'not educational' (I am sorry but I really don't agree with this)

- students mis-using/mis-interpreting

If the lecture is detailed then students will understand it in a much better way because they can reverse and can listen to the lecture again.

Learning how to make our own ceative video production was fun and helpful as it relates to the learning process.Videos are a way to lead to inquiry and to generate learning through doing. The technology lends itself to creative play in several different modalities. It also encorages questioning and wonderment.Students relate to video production readily.
