HOW DOES MARIJUANA AFFECT THE BRAIN?
AKUDO EJELONU
Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the dried leaves drug known as marijuana. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is "usually smoked or eaten to entice euphoria." (1). Throughout the years, there has been research on the negative and positive effects of marijuana on the human body and the brain. Marijuana is frequently beneficial to the treatment of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain. However, researchers such as Jacques-Joseph Moreau have been working to explain how marijuana has harmful affects on the functions of central nervous system and hinders the memory and movement of the user's brain. The focus of my web paper is how the chemicals in marijuana, specifically cannabinoids and THC have an effect on the memory and emotions of a person's central nervous system.
Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons. These nerves respond by altering their initial behavior. For example, if a nerve is suppose to assist one in retrieving short-term memory, cannabinoids receptors make them do the opposite. So if one has to remember what he did five minutes ago, after smoking a high dose of marijuana, he has trouble. Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids, which are psychoactive compounds that are produced inside the body after cannabis is metabolized or is extorted from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids is an active ingredient of marijuana. The most psychoactive cannabinoids chemical in marijuana that has the biggest impact on the brain is tetrahydrocannibol, or THC. THC is the main active ingredient in marijuana because it affects the brain by binding to and activating specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters."(2) Neurotransmitters are chemical messenger molecules that carry signals between neurons. Some of these affects are personality disturbances, depression and chronic anxiety. Psychiatrists who treat schizophrenic patient advice them to not use this drug because marijuana can trigger severe mental disturbances and cause a relapse.
When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered. Marijuana's damage to short-term memory occurs because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. "One region of the brain that contains a lot of THC receptors is the hippocampus, which processes memory."(3) Hippocampus is the part of the brain that is important for memory, learning, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivation. It also converts information into short-term memory. "Because it is a steroid, THC acts on the hippocampus and inhibits memory retrieval."(4) THC also alters the way in which sensory information is interpreted. "When THC attaches to receptors in the hippocampus, it weakness the short-term memory,"(5) and damages the nerve cells by creating structural changes to the hippocampus region of the brain. When a user has a high dose of marijuana, new information does not register into their brain and this may be lost from memory and they are not able to retrieve new information for more than a few minutes. There is also a decrease in the activity of nerve cells.
There are two types of memory behavior that is affected by marijuana, recognition memory and free cells. Recognition memory is the ability to recognize correct words. Users can usually recognize words that they previous saw before smoking but claim to recognize words that they did not previously see before smoking. This mistake is known as memory intrusions. Memory intrusions are also the consequence of THC affecting the free cell of the brain. "Marijuana disrupts the ability to freely recall words from a list that has been presented to an intoxicated subject."(6) For example, if a list of vocabulary words presented to the intoxicated subject and few minutes later, they have to recall the words that were on the list. The only words that they remember are the last group of words and not the words that are in the beginning of the list. This is an initiation that their memory storage has been affected. "The absence of an effect at short term delay times indicates that cannabinodis did not impair the ability to perform the basic task, but instead produce a selective learning and/or memory deficit."(7) I did a study with two college students (Student A and Student B) who both smoke marijuana every other week. This particular study was done an hour before, while and after they were under the influence of the drug. Student A was watching television before she smoked marijuana, was asked which advertisement was splayed before the show started and she got four out of five of her answers correct. After this first section, she smoked a small dose of marijuana twice within an hour. Fifteen minutes after she smoked her last blunt, she continued her regular activity of watching sitcoms. When a commercial would come on, I would ask her simple questions like what happened before the show went to a commercial break. Her responses would be macro-answers about what was going on but when I asked her what the main character was wearing, she did not remember. This was ironic because the protagonist wore a bright yellow suit that my friend commenting on earlier when the show began ten minutes ago. Her short-term memory is weakening because she was only able to remember big picture information and not small picture. Though the results are interesting, I know that I would have had different response on someone else because it depends on how often the user smokes and if they have good memory prior to smoking weed.
Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next. This instant change in emotions has to do with the way that THC affects the brain's limbic system. The limbic system is another region of the brain that governs one's behavior and emotions. It also "coordinates activities between the visceral base-brain and the rest of the nervous system."(8) I am now going to use Students B to describe how emotions are affected by marijuana. Students B is an articulate and well spoken young woman who has a troublesome relationship with her best friends which gets her upset and tense up. But after she smoked one high dose weed, her body was relaxed however, she had trouble formulating her thoughts clearly and would talk in pieces and was jubilant. It has been researched that a person needs to have high dose of marijuana would be in the state of euphoria. High dose of marijuana is measured as "15mg of THC can cause increased heart rate, gross motor disturbances, and can lead to panic attacks."(9) Thankfully, Student A did not experience any of these extreme examples.
College students usually smoke marijuana because they are stressed over schoolwork and feel that marijuana can help them unwind. I have encountered marijuana smokers who are chilled and have no worries in the world but after the effect of the drug wears off, they're sometimes capable to tacking their problem or at the original state that they were in before the drug. The effects of happiness that marijuana usually cause to the user is not a lasting effect because even though a user smokes weed to get away from the troubles of his/her own life, they still have to face these problems after the effects of the drug wears-off. In a survey with college student, an organization called, parents: the Anti-Drug interviewed college students and found that "compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention."(10) This was evident through my second experiment with Student B but not everyone who smoke high doses of marijuana experience the same affect.
The chemicals in marijuana bring cognitive impairment and troubles with learning for the user. "Smoking [marijuana] causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused but cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Some researchers believe that has changes may put a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs such a cocaine and heroin."(11) To prevent such harm, one must be cautious of their actions. Those who do not do drugs do not risk harm. So please the next day you light up, remember you that you central nervous system and brain will be at risk.

I smoked pot straight now since I was 13 years old Im
25 now I smoke it everyday literally through a Bong. I do not smoke
well im at work but as soon as im off and for the remainder of the
evening till I end up going to bed I do smoke. Now I read your page
about the effects pot has on short term memory and brain function,
Since I started smoking pot my asthma has vanished my grades went up in
school my mind learns at quicker rates and my short term memory is far
from gone There isnt much I forget about, unless it is because of my
selective memory. Were the people that you tested on already marijuana
smokers and also there are diff things to be taken into consideration
when testing a substance for example the way it was grown marijuana has
to be grown with nutrients and fertalizers to become potent enough to
smoke for a high but when people use these fertilizers and such they
sometimes do not leech the foods out from the plants which could lead
to all kinds of bad side effects Im wondering if this kind of
inforamtion is taken into consideration when giving test subjects
marijuana to smoke or ingest.
I have no side effects other than a burnt out feeling after smoking all
nite, and in teh morning of course but no brain problems like teh ones
your website describes ... Chris, 7 July 2006
Yeah...i disagree on a lot of things that you have to say about this. Like for one some of the things you mentioned only happen while you're high, but after the high goes away those things do as well. Marijuana is not addicting like other hard drugs or alcohol. Also marijuana helps people with ADD, makes them focus better, and sometimes learn better. Sometimes when you smoke your nerves are more dull, but sometimes they can be more alive, so to speak. You need to know that everybody reacts to marijuana differently. So these test that your doing don't go for everybody. You need to let people know that or else thats kind of false information. Something that really got to me is when you were talking about how people do it to relax and get their mind of things and once the highs gone all the problems come back. Well once again everybody reacts differently to marijuana. A lot of people when there high talk a lot about there problems and life in general. What I'm getting at here is that while their high they can figure out there problems because being high brings you into a new type of world and you think about everything more carefully. It's like it opens up your brain and lets you think more into your thoughts and about whats going on. A lot of times they can solve their problems like that, especially when there is someone there with them to talk to. Marijuana also brings people together. I know someone who hated a bunch of people, but then one day ended up smoking with them. Next thing she knew, they were all the best of friends. I know a group of people and within that group you've got your "gangster" type, Punk type, goth type, preppy type, hick type, and the list just keeps going. All of them probably wouldn't even talk if it wasn't for marijuana bringing them together. I have a lot more to say but, I'm not going to because I have pretty much proved my point. Also marijuana brings the creativeness out in people. Some of the greatest authors, poets, music artist, painters, and so on, get their great ideas or create there masterpieces by being high.
P.S I would also like to add that I am a chronic user and I could remember your whole entire report on it. I also have excellent grades in school, in fact better than when I didn't smoke. I also would just like to add one more thing: You will not understand or ever be able to know how or what marijuana does to you unless you do it yourself. Trust me I once was all anti-marijuana and always said that it does all these bad things to you and blah blah blah. Well now I actually know how it really does make people feel because I have experienced it and everything there is in that type of world.
P.S.S I do agree with a few things that you had to say ... Jen, 9 November 2006
Hi, I really found this information very useful because it IS a misconvention among most of the college/university goers that marijuana increases concentration and increases the work capacity of an individual. I personally believe that it DOES increase the work capacity of the abuser to some extent, that's when the drug abuser is not in a "stoned" state of mind, but then too, what is at stake is the brain and central nervous system malfunctioning, which degrades the intellectual, job and social skills. So in my opinion, it's not a good deal ... Ankur Gupta, 25 February 2007
allright tell me something if you say a list of say 20-30 vocabulary words and you were asked to read them over, then you were asked say 5 minutes later to remember as many of those words as you can, do you really think you'll be able to do that? no i bet if you asked 100 people to do that that around 90% of them wouldnt be able to do it.
also riddle me this batman, how many people die each year from drunk driving accidents? now dont im pretty sure you've been drunk, and maybe once smoked pot in your life right? well which had a more sever affect the weed or the alcohol? yeah the alcohol!
im a stoner i will proudly say that. but if i have the choice between alcohol and weed i'd take weed anyday. i've driven high that isnt a problem. when im high i drive a little slower then normal and im lookin for the nearest 7-11.
weed isnt a drug it has no addictive characteristics what so ever!!! ciggaretes kill more people then alchol, guns, and pissed off husbands who come home early.
now weed doesnt lead to other drugs what so ever, i've been smokin the stuff everyday for the past 4 years and i have yet to even think about trying other drugs. if mother nature didnt want us to smoke it she wouldnt have put it here!
its as simple as that!! ... Reader on the web, 21 July 2007
Hello, I was told about this site as a friend of mine was completing a research paper. As I looked over it, there seems to be lots of misinformation involved, and my friend has abandoned this site. I wouldn't mind if you read through all of my message carefully. To start off, the following statement is not backed by any scientific evidence what so ever. "Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons." This has been proven to be false on multiple occasions since the 1970's. Cannabinoids to not not impinge on the nervous system what so ever, this isn't lysergic acid we're dealing with. "Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids" This quote right here is misleading. Every plant is comprised of hundreds of chemicals. In fact, they're not even chemicals, they're just substances that comprise the plants' structure. Also, the majority of cannabinoids that are also found in cannabis are produced by the body naturally. Also regarding cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters." This is simply false, I do not know where this source came from. Your brain does not use cannabinoid receptors for memory, thought, or concentration. Next, saying that "When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered." is also blatantly false. Marijuana does not directly impact memory, but short term memory only when high off of THC or CBD is affected because the user may be 'distracted' if you will from the plant it self. Also, referring to a 'high dose' of marijuana is ridiculous. There is no such thing as a high dose of Cannabis because there is no possible way to overdose. It is strictly impossible. The most obnoxious quote that i've read from this site is, "Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next." I cannot believe that this would even be published. MARIJUANA DOES NOT CHANGE A USERS STATE OF MIND. PEOPLE CAN MAKE THE SAME RATIONAL DECISIONS AS THEY WOULD WHEN NOT USING THE PLANT. PERIOD. I am actually appalled by what I've read here, and I'm even more appalled by the sources you've used. Unlike true informational sites, you've only used web sources. That is completely absurd. If you look at any reasonable fact site about Cannabis you will see that the sources that are used are mainly from published books and factual citations. Please realize that much of what is on this web page is completely false and misleading. I wouldn't mind hearing a response soon to defend your case ... Spiros Thomas, 7 November 2007

Marijuana
I think all you people who judge weed should just stfu all ready. Yeah it may be bad in some ways but who gives a fuck if someone you dont know gets high? Does that really affect you if i smoke a joint to my head? No it doesnt. If cigarettes are legal pot should be too.. and all you people who talk like retards arent helping my point any. I smoke weed several times a day and i have goals and plans for my life. Just because i get high doesnt make me a bad person. So stop judging and get a fucking life already.
There is a high possibility
There is a high possibility you have other underlying issues that make you feel in this manner.
It sounds like you should of
It sounds like you should of never stopped using it.
superhuman powers thanks to the ganja
ever since i started smoking pot i can jump twice as high, whistle three times louder, my hair grows whenever i tell it to, i have no hair on my feet cuz i told it to stop, i am three inches taller and longer, i can eat jalepeno pepers by the dozens, i can snort ice cream through my elbow, and i can look through wood doors with my super sonic eyes.
and english teachers hit on my friends
Narcissism, stop right there!
That is great! I am wrong, you are right, I am right, you are wrong, how about... I do what I want with myself, and as long as I'm not hurting anyone, it's okay. How about.. it is a choice I decided to make, and what is it to you that I smoke marijuana? You don't have to be mildly intelligent to understand that, we were born to make our own choices in this life. Just because it is something someone does not like, I simply suggest the most common response, mind your own business. I am postiive you have better things to do than to try and stop strangers from smoking marijuana, unless you're an advocate for a drug free existence. Let me suggest something that will hopefully give you something to do; watch the comedic work of Bill Hicks and read A Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. God Bless.
Really? It's not just the
Really? It's not just the "strangers" we are trying to prevent from smoking, it's our family, friends, and everything in between. If pot was "so good for you" it would be legal. Its effects are different for every person, that's why it is not legal. Some people react very badly, but others can take the DRUG. I admit, I would rather my family smoke weed, rather than cigarettes, but cigarettes ARE legal. In the words of an innocent child, drugs are bad. We all know this in our hearts, no matter how much a drug can do for you. We all know drugs make people feel better, but they're a choice you shouldn't ever have to go to. I think everyone should just learn how to live their lives, instead of going to artificial happiness. If four hours of feeling good is what you want, then go ahead and kill your brain. We all know it's your choice to make. Be a coward.
marijuana is for potheads and
marijuana is for potheads and low life losers. weed is a waste of money also. last but not least, dont do drugs!
wtf
weed is mother natures gold.
and WEED IS NOT A DRUG
P.S. saying that shit will piss off a lot of people
P.S.S. MARIJUANA IS NOT A DRUG
Marry-wahnah!
I'm guessing pretty much everyone spouting the message "don't do drugs" probably hasn't done any drugs (cept alcohol but hay that's different right?), I used to be the same, then I went to university and did lots of drugs, screwed myself up because I did too many in too many combinations (some of them were research chemicals, thus no catchy slang names). And yet a few months later I was fine, a year later and there's no lasting damage, at least none that has any impact on my life.
There are alcoholics, therefore alcohol is bad right? Wrong! People will screw themselves up on drugs, legal or illegal, doesn't matter which - what matters is that we realize that the phenomenon of drug use has been around since long before recorded history and will continue for as long as there are ways to get high, the only thing we do by banning well known illegal drugs is push people out into using ever more experimental chemicals that we know nothing about. Better stick to the devils we know, we know their effects well and we have experience of treating their ill effects.
You will find that those who do their drugs in moderation are not f'ed up, do not have any difficulties brought about by their poison of choice, and in many cases are actually better people for being able to have the freedom to relax or party or whatever they choose to do while under the influence of a drug. Of course there are exceptions who will take something once and pop their clogs, but most of them didn't actually just try it once (their parents like to think that's what happened) and the ones that did, well they're just plain unlucky, more people choke to death on their food though and we're not banning food (yet).
Had another point I was going to make too, but I forgot it so... If I remember it I'll post it.
no
if it weed were to be legalized the econymy would be better but it isnt the smokers fault the prezident doesnt want to legalize it
wow someone is very stereotypical!!!
Really??? way to stereotype completely. Only low life losers and potheads smoke... for one I know plenty of people who smoke weed on occasion, so they would not be considered a pot head and yet they smoke. For second what about even our own president who has admitted to smoking before and is not against marijuana?? Is he and everyother person who has smoked a lowlife? I would considern a lowlife someone who doesnt want or care to do anything with them self or their life. Smoking marijuana does not effect the way you live your life, it is your own choices that will effect your life. You chose your additudes and your actions wether you are high or not your desicion effects you. Their are plenty of people who smoke that I am sure you had no idea that they did, teachers, doctors, nurses, managers.. people you would never think. People I have highly respected in my work place and are on their way to the top in their life from school and work, I have found that they smoke and that does not change my oppinion of them in anyway. I still have the high respect towards them and it has shown me that you can do what you want with your self no matter what the case!
WOW! You are arrogant, aren't you!
WOW! Way to stereotype a huge portion of the human race whom you have never met. I for one smoke weed, have done almost every day for the past year to 18 months. I don't smoke in work but I do when I am at home.
I am 24, I work as a reporting analyst for a telecoms company in the UK. I have a nice income, I own my house with my girlfriend of 5 years, and I drive a 04 BMW 316(I'm not a dick though, lol). In what way exactly am I a low life loser? All those words have individual meaning however when you put them all together they leave the 'real word world' and enter the world of slang. According to dictionary.com the definition of a Low life is "n. a low person; a repellent person" and the definition of a loser is, "a misfit, esp. someone who has never or seldom been successful at a job, personal relationship, etc". Remember people this would be a much better place if we took the time to understand one another instead of assuming the worst. It would also be better if we removed the monetary system, but hey, thats not gonna happen is it? ;)
Also before I go, as you so eagerly pointed out 'marijuana is for potheads', care to hazard a guess why they are called potheads in the first place? Its like saying cigarettes are for smokers.
Peace.
hey i dont really think that
hey i dont really think that way,you can always do the best in whatever you do,smoking weed is also something that you just have to know how to treat with it,i know many old people who are smoking weed from long time ago,and they are so successful with their job and life and everything..when you are high you can see the reality of everything and you can use all your senses so much better than normal times, and you think wiser and you can focus on what you are doing, and it's amazing when you see things better than normal people, and if you just smoke weed for a short period of time in your life and then quit it,you are already a very different person from who you used to be and from anyone around you because now you have learned how to see things and you are even the winner
Anti-weed *crying*
After reading this article and most of the comments. I have to say that most of the people on here who disagree with using MJ sound almost a little sad and pathetic One guy on here said he smoked for 10 years quit now and has chronic depression and thinks about suicide constintaly, Guy weed didnt do that to you, you have a chemical inbalance in your underdeveloped brain, weed has most likely been the reason you havent felt this way before. and for the comment on how the guy will never smoke again because of all the typos in these comments You are piece of shit who had nothing better to post than other people gramical errors please respond FA.G. there are many other things i would like to add to this stupid article but i guess id rather go satisfy my canibinoids.
peace
Dude
dude, you're calling some of the greatest people to have ever lived low life losers. It's people like you who are hated more that potheads. So get off your soapbox and quit judging people..You should realize that the government made pot illegal based on some accusations made by some jackass who had never toked in his life, based on bias information. You dont know anything until you light up a joint. I understand your ignorance, but know what your talking about before you go on about something like Mary Jane.
I have smoked weed everyday
I have smoked weed everyday for 3 years coming up to 4, sometimes i get short term memory loss but nothing major. Weed helps me write music, art and poetry. I didnt smoke weed much in high school i hated it. But after i left school the stress about finding a job and what not kicked in and i started smoking weed everyday. Started smoking bongs for a year and a half. ( i recommend not to ) and i noticed it was hard to breath ( probably cause im a heavy ciggerette smoker to ) and then i tried to quit smoking all together PPL SAY MARIJUANA IS NOT ADDICTIVE, but when u smoke bongs everday for a year and a half and then trying to quit u will notice u start to become sick when u dont have it ( its not only me all my friends are heavy weed smokers they get the same sickness as i do when i havent smoked ) but now i dont smoke bongs ne more only smoked joints and blunts and i noticed when i didnt have it for like a week or so i didnt feel sick. I didnt have ne breathing problems. SMOKE A J, TO KEEP THE DOCTOR AWAY!
I have smoked weed for the
I have smoked weed for the past 4 years (ALMOST DAILY) straight and before that i found it hard to concentrate in school and even simply read a book. I smoke just about every day, and ill even go a week without the use of it (because of no money). It is definitely not addictive because i dont freak out about not having it. honestly, i am not dependent on it.i dont know why people say it is addictive, because it is not. there are many biased opinions about the use of marijuana being negative on the brain and schoolwork etc.My schoolwork, concentration, comprehension, and creativity has increased due to the use of the PLANT. And it pisses me off when i see retards use it because of a rap idol etc.. Its bullshit and they are the ones who ruin the view of the PLANT. It is a way of expanding your minds capabilities and a way of appreciating life a lot more. thats why when i see people say it screws up your mind and short term memory i just laugh. Almost every test ive taken in my later years in highschool and now college, ive lit up prior to it, and received a better grade on it (not to mention i never took notes and was high the majority of the time in class). I pay attention a lot more and there is no selective hearing. While under the influence i actually WANT to learn and achieve in order to shut up the people against it and say "TOLD YA SO". try looking at this topic from another perspective and try to understand that what marijuana does to you is not bad...alcohol consumption is hella worse and effects your body much more for the worse. And not to mention the number of deaths due to alcohol is a lot more than all other drugs... COMBINED! Legalize it for medicinal purposes.. id love to see it for recreational, but thats just asking for too much.. dont take a mile when your given an inch. and yea, it effects people differently, so if you dont like how it effects you, simply dont do it, and dont try to screw it up for people who are able to handle it.
Bad
Every day I smoked weed, nothing hapend, Till one day.
I smoked to many times in day *2*.
in other day in Morning I smoked 1 time and in night smoked 1 time.
After that, My brain got fu** up.
I Really don't know what hapend.
But I am deep in reality.
I see world in other way.
All is weard, I feel high all the time, now I don't smoke it.
This high is 3 day's, I don't know what to do.
yo
I been smoking weed since I was 12 yeah dats right 12 n it makes me feel good and alive at 1st I don't like it because when I think about something it keeps loopin in my head after that I just feel nice and good I don't no why they won't legalize it!!
In my opinion...lets look at the bigger picture.
I've read what the posters voiced. What concerns me, you argue about its efficacy, its science component and positive effects for using marijuana; how the author states its negative effects. There are several web pages and books in support of this plant. Let’s agree that there may be some positive effects from use. As some people use it for health reasons prescribed by their doctor while others use it illegally. Let’s view other factors.
For the non-prescripts, how do you support your habit? If you work or have a regular trust fund available to you, how much money - or the government's money - comes out of your pocket (or somebody else) to support your habit? Do you pay all your bills (and on time), or are you broke living paycheck to paycheck to support this habit? Or, do you borrow money you know you will never pay back to support this habit? What are your hobbies and interests? How does this affect your job? How often are drug test given and when tested how many lose their jobs once tch has been found in your system.
Let’s look at the bigger picture. From a relational view, how are your relationships with your family and friends (the non-dysfunctional ones)? Do you still have the same non-smoking friends as you may have had before this drug became a part of your living? What happened to your healthy friends? Do your friends consist of an aggregate group, who share in your belief to smoke pot or whatever name you want to call it? If you have children, do you smoke in front of them? Or even in tight quarters to smoke around them?
There are many more questions than what I have not been explored. There are similarities to the use of any form of drug that is used, whether it is alcohol, meth and marijuana to its consequences.
You are entitled to your opinions as I and the same as the author of this page. Maybe the author should have included not its science component; the relation. Be sure you look at the complete picture before judging the other party.
Weed is a crazy thing. It can
Weed is a crazy thing. It can either make like easier or it can really destroy your life. I'm a junior in college & I started out as a very occasional smoker, only once or twice a month.. Then it tuned weekly..then it turned into daily. And now basically all I do is go to clas then come home and get high with my room mates. I used to be a very good student, with great grades and attendance. Now my grades are pretty bad and I don't usually go to class unless I have to. Also, I was very outgoing before and now, even when I'm not high, I have social anxiety and a lower self esteem. My point is. There are some people who can smoke weed and lead a productive life and then there are those of us who can't. There's no problem trying weed out. Just figure out if its for you and if its not, be honest with yourself and get rid of the habit before its too late. And if you're worried about peer pressure or whatever, forget it. In ten years those people aren't gonna give a damn if you smoke weed. Live for yourself and nobody else, take care of yourself and prepare for the future!
Also I have decided that after this bad runs out I'm going to try to stop smoking or at least cut back and extreme amount! So wish me luck!
<3 blessings :)
Doctor!
Im 27 years old and live in Northern California. I have smoked weed off and on since I was 14. It is so plentiful here and with living next to Humboldt county I have smoked some of the strongest strains available. My intake was daily for years. Anywhere from 1 gram a day to 7 grams a day. I smoked out of bongs and I rolled blunts. Believe me when I tell you that your body will become dependant on THC when it is used in high doses. If your the type that smokes a bowl a day then this post is not for you. If your the type that smokes 2 plus blunts a day for a long period of time than this post might help if your trying to quit. Before quitting cold turkey tell your doctor you are planning on quitting. THC does effect your nervous system!! Hence the reson why peoplle have panic attacks and anxiety disorders when coming off of weed. This is more prevelant in hardcore chronic users than just the occasional tokers due to the amount of THC introduced to the system and the amount of time inbetween useage. Some things the doctor might prescribe are xanax and kolonopin to help with the anxiety and sleepless nights. Contrary to most peoples beliefs there is certain marijuana withdrawals when stopping after hard longterm use. Diarhea, anxiety, night sweats, tremors, just to name a few. Normally all but the nervous disorders pass within days but the nervous disorders can last indefinitly. If you do not have med insurance or like the hollistic approach than you can buy "5-HTP" pills from any drug store that will help alot with the anxiety/panic disorders. For the sleepless nights you can try a glass of red wine 30 mins before bed or if you dont drink or like red wine than buy melatonin pills from any drug store and take 30 mins before bed. Again, this post is geared toward the more chronic longterm user wanting to quit.
P.S. The confusion I see most commonly with marijuana use is the medicinal purposes vs recreational purposes. People that use it recreationally use the ecuse that its used for medicinal purposes to justify they're recreational use. Just remember the just like any prescribed drug your doctor gives that he/she feels the positives out weigh the negatives. For example an H.I.V patient prescribed marijuan because they can hold food down without it outweighs what possible nervous damage may or may not be caused by the usage. Not to mention prescribed marijuana is to be used as prescribed. Not smoke all day everyday!!
I hope that this helps who ever might read this and just remember that if you come accross this post when dealing with withdrawals just know it takes time and patients but eventually all will normalize again. Good luck!
Thank You
Hello,
I really appareciate you putting this post out there. I'm a long marijuana smoker and I've quit cold turkey. I'm getting some of the withdrawls effects and I was thinkin there's something wrong with me. Its good to know that i will normalize.
Thank YOu
Everyone is different.
This is simply the best comment on the page, "Some people can lead productive lives while smoking marijuana, and others cannot." I started smoking my Sophomore year in high school - maybe once a month. Now I smoke almost every day. I have the same grade point average as I did when I started smoking. I have a job. I run cross country, track, and I play soccer. I have a girlfriend. I love my friends. I love my parents. I love god. Obviously, marijuana has a different effect of every single person -. Count how many grammatical errors are in my post, and compare to the threads above.
What a bunch of propaganda,
What a bunch of propaganda, b/s and false facts. First of all God created Cannabis and second of all it is the only known cure for cancer. If you don't believe me do a little research on a man named Rick Simpson. And the reason you stole from people is because you let it take a hold of your life, obviously you have no self control which is not due to marijuana but due to your futile brain.
Do you even know why cannabis is illegal? Probably not because you obviously get your information from the government. Cannabis was made illegal because and I quote "Marijuana makes white women want to have interracial relations with black men." Bet you didn't know that did you? And anotherthing, probably one of you favorite presidents said "You know, it's a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana is Jewish. What the Christ is the matter with the Jews, Bob? What is the matter with them? I suppose it is because most of them are psychiatrists." - May 26, 1971 White House Tapes Released 3-2002
Yeah that was Tricky Dick Nixon.
And what about the industrial Hemp? Do you know anything about that? Probably not. Are you familiar with the term "Hemp for Victory"? Yes that's right the united States Government wanted farmers all across America to grow Hemp to support the troops during WWIII. Industrial Hemp has more than 200 uses, a few are paper, fuel and cloth. Did you know that George Washington and Adam Jefferson both grew Hemp and Cannabis and said make use of this plant and sow it everywhere? (And by the way, the man who invented Apple computers also smoked weed while creating Apple computers, as well as MLB pitcher Tim Lincecum from the SF Giants, Michael Phelps who won 8 GOLD MEDALS in the Olympics and the list goes on.)
I could go on for much longer but I think I'm just going to leave you with some quotes of some of the men who agreed with the use and cultivation of both the hemp and cannabis plant:
"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica."
- Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany)
"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country."
- Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President
"Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere."
- George Washington, U.S. President
"We shall, by and by, want a world of hemp more for our own consumption."
- John Adams, U.S. President
"Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marihuana in private for personal use... Therefore, I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marihuana."
- Jimmy Carter, U.S. President
"The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world." - Carl Sagan, renown scientist, astronomer, astrochemist, author and TV host
"Why use up the forests which were centuries in the making and the mines which required ages to lay down, if we can get the equivalent of forest and mineral products in the annual growth of the hemp fields?"
- Henry Ford, whose first Model-T was constructed from hemp fibers and built to run on hemp gasoline
"Prohibition... goes beyond the bound of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded"
-Abraham Lincoln
"The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerably by the prohibition law. For nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. It is an open secret that the dangerous increase of crime in this country is closely connected with this."
- Albert Einstein quote on Hemp
Well hopefully you now realize that Hemp and Marijuana are not bad (besides that marijuana gives you a higher rate of having Bronchitis when you're older) but can be used to stimulate our economy and even cure diseases.
One Love & Jah Bless.
Hey Where did you get all
Hey
Where did you get all your quotes and facts? I would like to look more into this, I knew about Hemp being used for paper and rope, I also heard that it was outlawed due to the fact the hemp industry would have killed the (whatever they made rope out of back then) industry. Im not sure the validity of that though.
when I smoked pot I was
when I smoked pot I was better. My therapist said it made me normal, she said when I came in an I had not been smoking I did not seem normal, and when I was in college all my work was done while I was smoked up and I made's A's and B's I live in a lot of pain every day and if my pain clinic allowed I would smoke it today for it is a very good pain medication.
Pot Heads
To: Pot Heads
I think the folks who post on here highlighting how they are proud to be chronic smokers, are in some serious denial. I am a psychologist and addiction therapist working in the field for years. What I've seen over and over and over again is that pot is an addiction. And pot heads are deluded thinking there are no negative affects on their lives from smoking. In fact, Pot Heads are often times dumb and lazy and unmotivated and exhibit various forms of mental illness; and have a hard time showing up in their own lives, ie consequences of smoking pot. People seeking treatment to stop smoking have an Extremly Difficult time getting clean because substances in pot are ADDICTIVE just like all the other mind mood altering chemicals. THC is addictive. Rather it be physically, emotionally, and/or mentally, it doesn't matter. Ask any pot head to stop smoking and they will tell you how hard it is. Oh, I don't mean not using for a day or a week or a month, I mean Staying Stopped. A drug is a drug is a drug. Track a pot head in his/her life and anyone with a brain will see the negative impact of their using, especially on memory, ability to learn, interpersonal relationships, their goals, their lung health, their cognitive problems, etc. Yes, I agree pot heads think they benifit from somking because often they use pot to address disabilities/disorders they have, such as symptoms of ADHD, Anxiety, Social fears, and other issues associated with their ability to function in a healhy way. Any normal healthy person doesn't need to (get high) use a drug to function! Smoking doesn't fix the problem(s), it only masks things and eventually everything gets worse. Getting clean and dealing with mental health problems with healthy methods is the solution. All you pot heads out there in denail land will one day wake up and realize how you have wasted so many years being unproductive, lost, and screwed up. And please stop comparting pot to other drugs, who cares what the others ones do or don't do. This is just another way of your justifying your addiction. The only way to be authentic, healthy, whole, happy, and to have peace in this life, is to be true to yourself without distructive chemicals and/or behaviors. Get Clean!
Wow... You should get a new job.
Well, I actually read everything you had to say. And completely disagree. I smoked pot for about... 3 years, straight. And functioned perfectly, I had no type of memory loss what so ever, nor was I ever lazy, and often played sports while 'high'. I had a successful career in the military, and had one of the highest PT ratings in my squad, meaning no ill effects on my lungs. It wasn't until I actually started smoking tobacco that I had issues with my stamina, and even still I was among the top athletes in my squad. Also, after my military career I smoked pot a few more times, and decided that I wanted to quit, and did. I have now been clean for 3 years and still see no side effects and it really wasn't hard to do. At all.
You may be a psychologist in
You may be a psychologist in the making but I do not believe you are a psychologist yet, more like a student. Your post lacks a certain professionalism such as referring to people who smoke grass as potheads. Yes it is a perfectly acceptable term, but from a psychologist when addressing said people about the negative effects, I don't think so, there were a few other things I noticed that didn't fit either bt that was the most obvious. Also yes there are negative affects, there are also positive ones. If the individual is aware of both they can make an informed decision.
People like you are why most
People like you are why most people are loosing respect for the doctorate. You are biased in your opinions.
I agree with in the the fact
I agree with in the the fact that weed is bad for you and may even be phycologicaly addictive but you can become phycologicaly addicted to anything, for example wearing a neclace the whole exprestion i feel naked without it but the feeling goes away reletivly quick. In this aspect you have never herd of any man sucking dick for weed. This can also be benifital to people with disablitys. I am i expothead all through high school i smoked i had anxiety and was dignosed with PTSD. An now im a sophomore at kettering university witch is one of the best enginering schools in the world. I still have good grades and stoped smoking no problem because im in a dorm so i belive the phycological addiction can be broken relitily easy.

Marijuana is the most horrible thing ever!
I don't even know why marijuana was created... How and why would something so harmful and useless be created. It must have been created by the devil. Marijuana kills! One time I smoked marijuana and I died! Marijuana makes people want to kill other people, use needles, and sleep with black guys. If you smoke marijuana you will die from overdose. It is better to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes like an American, than to smoke marijuana like something that is not American. People that use marijuana should be put on death row and await execution. Schools should teach our children that marijuana is the worst drug known to the human race. I will be so glad whenever all of the pot heads are dead. LOL, By the way, I got some bad ass Hindu kush right meow. Killer buds!
LOl Hated it then loved it
LOl Hated it then loved it lol :)
Marijuana
Marijuana is the subject of endless scrutiny and debate. Many people believe it is bad for reasons that are understandable, and many believe it is good for reasons that are understandable. I have been smoking weed since i was sixteen, I'm eighteen now, and the course of my life has changed. For better or worse is apparently for others to judge, and not for me to say. I believe that marijuana is a great tool, and tools can be good or bad depending on who uses them. If used moderately and responsibly, it can be beneficial to you, but if abused, it can be a disaster for you and all those around you. Marijuana effects us all differently and its effects can never be pinpointed. My advice on the subject is live and let live. If you don't smoke marijuana, be responsible, if you do smoke marijuana, be responsible. Hold yourself to a set of values that is constructive to humanity, and don't try to make the world into your vision.
One Love
Start saying "Cannabis" instead
I think people should stop using the term "marijuana" and start using "Cannabis". Marijuana is a term used back in the day (especially 1930's) to scare people away from it(Propaganda).
I have never read a more
I have never read a more stupid list of comments, such as, "It isn't as hard on your lungs as ciggs" and "there is no long term damage to smoking pot"... Smoking one joint the size of a cigg is 5 times as dirty as a cigg. Think about the bong water and how disgusting it is. And can anyone tell me the biological half life of marijuana??? Hmmmmm, well it's 8 days. Stop and think about that one. (Unless you stoners haven't made it that far in school to know what that term means.)
Finally someone Inhabiting
Finally someone Inhabiting our Planet with some Fucking brains. God im so sick of all the fuck-wit stoners who's "lives are too stressfull" go have a fucking cry.
Different effects for different people
I've been reading through all of these replies, and some of these people are just ignorant. For myself, smoking marijuana curbs my anxiety, gives me more patience with my kids, helped me concentrate in college to graduate with highest honors, and helps me work through my problems by aiding with meditation and yoga.
I have been smoking everyday for 16 years, and the only people who know are the people I choose to tell. Even my own boyfriend can't tell the difference in me being high or sober other than the fact that I deal with life and people in a calm manner when high. I've been open with my kids about it. I don't avoid people to hide it. I don't just sit on my butt and eat and watch tv. I maintain a clean household, I work out every single day, and have an energy level like no other, I am a single mother of 3, all 3 of my kids are straight A students who never miss a day of school, and I am always the Go-To girl when someone needs something or just needs a shoulder to cry on. Oh and I NEVER miss work, where by the way, I happen to be the most hard-working employee.
There are, however, people who can't handle smoking weed, and those are the people who make it bad for everyone. I had a boyfriend at one time who smoked constantly. He would become lazy and very stupid when he smoked. He couldn't or should I say, wouldn't hold down a job, or clean out to get a good one. This caused problems. If you can't handle it in a productive way, then you shouldn't use it. Period. Just like alcohol. I cannot seem to cut myself off when I drink, so being a smart person, I choose to not ever drink. Same principle should go for weed.
Most anti-weed people either A. have never smoked before or B. are so stuck on the fact that it's illegal and lumped into the same category as other more harmful drugs to look at it in a less stereotypical way. I am in no way saying that they are wrong for thinking the way they do because everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that's okay, but before they bash on those of us who are fully functioning smokers, they should really get their facts straight, and understand that it does effect people differently. We are so big on not being stereotypical when it comes to race or sex, so why not this?
Oh, and if you are on here defending weed, it would be wise and more productive to our cause if you didn't come off sounding unintelligent. There are quite a few replies on here where the people just sound plain stupid. You are the people who can't use it in a mature way, so you probably shouldn't be smoking.
Please
Hi to all you smokers! Well there are two sides to every story. As I read through all your excuses and no reason I wonder what your point is. Show me statistics on the purpose of smoking. I have saw many excuses and no logic or education behind your stories. Its time to come out of your imaginary world and start to be a little bit realistic!!!!! Yeah sure you do better in school. What school? High School? A twelve year old can do that! Pot smokers always have some rediculus excuse as to why you should smoke. There are to many educated reasons not to smoke. So when you reach an education level and can put some realism behind it then hey prove me wrong. Until then you are wrong and short term!
You need to watch "The Union:
You need to watch "The Union: The business behind getting high" and that will answer the a lot of your misconceptions about cannabis.
I agree! "The Union: The business behind getting high"
For Marijuana or against it should watch this documentary. Its been one of the best films I've seen this year! I would really like to see the looks on peoples faces when they watch this and realize how much they don't know about Marijuana. You can really learn about the history of it and maybe look at each side. Cheers to both sides! I enjoy reading all these comments on this topic! End the prohibition of Marijuana. Remember the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s? Pretty sure that didn't last.
Put your bias away, thanks.
Hello critical non-smoker,
Your beginning statement is valid in that there ARE always two sides to the story.
For one, I don't believe that you are in any position to criticize us smokers and insult our intelligence. Not only do you have improper grammar ("I have saw"? I believe you meant "I have seen")and incorrect and excessive use of punctuation (i.e., your 5 exclamation points), your comment shows your extreme bias and dislike for those who use marijuana.
"Pot smokers always have some rediculus excuse as to why you should smoke. There are to many educated reasons not to smoke. So when you reach an education level and can put some realism behind it then hey prove me wrong. Until then you are wrong and short term!" What do you even mean by 'short term'? I take great offense to this, not only because you are insulting my intelligence for merely using marijuana, you are putting me as less than you. There is no need for condescending comments here. I smoke marijuana, and have for the past year and a half to two years, and I happen to be very intelligent. I am 15 years old, and in the IB programme. I doubt you know what that is, so maybe you should look it up. I think the fact that I am in IB is enough proof to suggest that all marijuana smokers are NOT dumb/lazy/unmotivated/etc. Marijuana helps me to release stress, and without it I probably wouldn't be able to stay in such a rigorous school program. Next time you want to insult someones intelligence for something as small as smoking marijuana, maybe you should take a look at yourself and see if you're even in the position to talk.
Well spoken
Hey I admire what you've said :)
I am a potsmoker myself. I admit I smoke everyday, however it does make me a bit slower at times. Still, I am motivated at school. Get A's and B's in International Cambridge at A-level. During exams I can stop smoking pot for a month or two full stop :) No sweat, and I've been smoking for 2 and a half years.
It is usually kids who have nothing to do (already unmotivated and going nowhere), who finds quiting hard. I have friends in Top Medschools and Engineering schools in the states, australia and new zealand, still uses marijuana now and then.
Marijuana is okay now and then, probably not chronic use. 3-4 times a day.
I still can't get over, you can buy cigarettes and high percentage alcohol in supermarkets. When it does more physical harm to people using it and people around them.
There should be some sort of marijuana awarness campaign. Not all this government anti-drug campaigns filled with propagandda, ill-informed science and inconsistency with laws and regulations.
Too many politicans don't want to drop and shit. So they cover them self with toilet paper-with marjoritised anti-pot campaigns. When they really should get a science degree. Less toilet paper mate, more research paper :)
i smoke weed casue i feel
i smoke weed casue i feel like it nd it donsent hurt us at all
I smoke weed everyday im not
I smoke weed everyday im not saying it makes u smarter but it helps with my headaches and other pain problems thats my purpose for smoking for me it works better then any over the counter drug! Now please show me statistics on how many people die from marijuana and then look up how many die from alcohol and tobacco
Is marijuana really all that bad? I mean damn.
What everybody who agrees with me is really trying to say is that weed really is a natutal drug that was put on this earth for a reason. I'm a user and have been ever since i was in the womb pretty much. My mother was a heavy smoker since age 13. Up untill about 2 years ago she was also an addict to cocaine and crack. Im 17 yearsold now and while i was growing up i couldn't stand to even be in my bedroom because i could smell it coming through my door at the bottom. I turned 13 and decided enough was enough when my mother couldn't even aford groceries for me and my little brother to eat with. My father lived in a differnt state at the time and i finally decided to call him and let him know what all was going on. DEFAX came and took me and my little brother away from my mom and sent us to live with our dad while my mom was being shipped to a rehab center to get better. When i moved in with him i was in 7th grade and that's when i first tried it under peer preasure. It was very difficult for me to enjoy it because i knew what all it had destroyed and taken away from me. After i found my first boyfriend in 9th grade i really started using it heavily. He was a reagular pot smoker and i loved him so i started using it too. After about a year it just came natural to smoke pot and and be high all afternoon. Now for about the past two years ive used it and loved every minute of it. My boyfriend and i are still users and probably will always be users. It openes your mind to so many different levels of life you really just cant explain it. What im trying to get at is you can't knock it till you try it and even if you have tried and dont like it then that's you. it affects everybody differently. And if we made it legal then there would be more time for cops to worry about all the rapists and murders then being to busy worrying about all the dope dealers and dope deals. To sum it all up i think our government just wastes to much time worrying about all the non important things. For instance, a 8 yearold girl somewhere is being raped and murdered, and somewhere a drug dealer is selling a dime bag. Which more seems more like we need to worry about? Exactly. Im no ordinary tenneage girl, i view life as a gift from god and everyday im glad i woke up. Marijuana just has horrible misconceptions and i hope one day everyone will realise the true wonderful affects it has on a single person.
I totaly agree with you on
I totaly agree with you on the last few sentences. i am pretty much screwed because i was caught with pot in school. i am surely gonna be expelled and now i have to do an essay for my guardians so i looked up this site to get "facts" about marijuana. it helps me pay attention im pretty sure i have ADD and i cant sit still ever i am sixteen years old and have used it since i was nine or ten because of my brother. There are some things you should understand about pot before you do it but unfortunately most people dont get to hear it. "you need to use it maturely, you cant just let it ruin your life. use it to help you and you can have the time of your life." that is what my cousin Chris told me a while ago. My brother, my mother, and my father all have dropped out of high school because they could not handle it. My father was in jail from before i was born till i was five, and is currently a roofer working for cash. My mother finally got a job the other day and up until then was living off of checks from the government for about two years. and i think my brother had it the worst, he was doing any drug he could get and is living with a nasty fifty year old women in a camper in the back of a pickup truck.
So what im trying to say is use this shit wisely and maturely, if you cant dont do it its that simple.
THANKS
this is total propaganda
"HOW DOES MARIJUANA AFFECT THE BRAIN?"
"AKUDO EJELONU"
(notice how the propaganda is in caps locks to SCARE YOU)
-note:I will analise about every sentence in parenthesis all parenthesis are me talking not the propaganda, not all parenthesis are corrections)if you get confused check the this is on
"Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the "dried leaves"(first of all its not just the leaves,")its the BUD mainly ,then the leaves, and stems and seeds, stems and seeds should not be smoked, and high quality cannabis usually has no seeds and not much stems)
"Marijuana is a cannabis plant(its not "a" cannabis plant, it IS THE ONLY CANNABIS PLANT there is 3 different species, and many strains from those species of cannabis, its not called marijuana its called CANNABIS) "that is usually "smoked or eaten to entice euphoria.""(you can also vaporize it which is not harmful like smoking is, and notice how they only said euphoria, it has MANY MANY more effects just research and/or see for yourself)
"Throughout the years, there has been research on the negative(no) and positive(yes) effects of marijuana on the human body and the brain."(Doesn't Marijuana cause brain damage?
the short answer: No.
The long answer: The reason why you ask this is because you
probably heard or read somewhere that marijuana damages
brain cells, or makes you stupid. These claims are untrue.
The first one -- marijuana kills brain cells -- is based on
research done during the second Reefer Madness Movement. A
study attempted to show that marijuana smoking damaged brain
structures in monkeys. However, the study was poorly
performed and it was severely criticized by a medical review
board. Studies done afterwards failed to show any brain
damage, in fact a very recent study on Rhesus monkeys used
technology so sensitive that scientists could actually see
the effect of learning on brain cells, and it found no
damage.
But this was Reefer Madness II, and the prohibitionists were
looking around for anything they could find to keep the
marijuana legalization movement in check, so this study was
widely used in anti-marijuana propaganda. It was recanted
later.
(To this day, the radical anti-drug groups, like P.R.I.D.E.
and Dr. Gabriel Nahas, still use it -- In fact, America's
most popular drug education program, Drug Abuse Resistance
Education, claims that marijuana ``can impair memory
perception & judgement by destroying brain cells.'' When
police and teachers read this and believe it, our job gets
really tough, since it takes a long time to explain to
children how Ms. Jones and Officer Bob were wrong.)
The truth is, no study has ever demonstrated cellular
damage, stupidity, mental impairment, or insanity brought on
specifically by marijuana use -- even heavy marijuana use.
This is not to say that it cannot be abused, however.
