HOW DOES MARIJUANA AFFECT THE BRAIN?

AKUDO EJELONU

Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the dried leaves drug known as marijuana. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is "usually smoked or eaten to entice euphoria." (1). Throughout the years, there has been research on the negative and positive effects of marijuana on the human body and the brain. Marijuana is frequently beneficial to the treatment of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain. However, researchers such as Jacques-Joseph Moreau have been working to explain how marijuana has harmful affects on the functions of central nervous system and hinders the memory and movement of the user's brain. The focus of my web paper is how the chemicals in marijuana, specifically cannabinoids and THC have an effect on the memory and emotions of a person's central nervous system.

Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons. These nerves respond by altering their initial behavior. For example, if a nerve is suppose to assist one in retrieving short-term memory, cannabinoids receptors make them do the opposite. So if one has to remember what he did five minutes ago, after smoking a high dose of marijuana, he has trouble. Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids, which are psychoactive compounds that are produced inside the body after cannabis is metabolized or is extorted from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids is an active ingredient of marijuana. The most psychoactive cannabinoids chemical in marijuana that has the biggest impact on the brain is tetrahydrocannibol, or THC. THC is the main active ingredient in marijuana because it affects the brain by binding to and activating specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters."(2) Neurotransmitters are chemical messenger molecules that carry signals between neurons. Some of these affects are personality disturbances, depression and chronic anxiety. Psychiatrists who treat schizophrenic patient advice them to not use this drug because marijuana can trigger severe mental disturbances and cause a relapse.

When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered. Marijuana's damage to short-term memory occurs because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. "One region of the brain that contains a lot of THC receptors is the hippocampus, which processes memory."(3) Hippocampus is the part of the brain that is important for memory, learning, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivation. It also converts information into short-term memory. "Because it is a steroid, THC acts on the hippocampus and inhibits memory retrieval."(4) THC also alters the way in which sensory information is interpreted. "When THC attaches to receptors in the hippocampus, it weakness the short-term memory,"(5) and damages the nerve cells by creating structural changes to the hippocampus region of the brain. When a user has a high dose of marijuana, new information does not register into their brain and this may be lost from memory and they are not able to retrieve new information for more than a few minutes. There is also a decrease in the activity of nerve cells.

There are two types of memory behavior that is affected by marijuana, recognition memory and free cells. Recognition memory is the ability to recognize correct words. Users can usually recognize words that they previous saw before smoking but claim to recognize words that they did not previously see before smoking. This mistake is known as memory intrusions. Memory intrusions are also the consequence of THC affecting the free cell of the brain. "Marijuana disrupts the ability to freely recall words from a list that has been presented to an intoxicated subject."(6) For example, if a list of vocabulary words presented to the intoxicated subject and few minutes later, they have to recall the words that were on the list. The only words that they remember are the last group of words and not the words that are in the beginning of the list. This is an initiation that their memory storage has been affected. "The absence of an effect at short term delay times indicates that cannabinodis did not impair the ability to perform the basic task, but instead produce a selective learning and/or memory deficit."(7) I did a study with two college students (Student A and Student B) who both smoke marijuana every other week. This particular study was done an hour before, while and after they were under the influence of the drug. Student A was watching television before she smoked marijuana, was asked which advertisement was splayed before the show started and she got four out of five of her answers correct. After this first section, she smoked a small dose of marijuana twice within an hour. Fifteen minutes after she smoked her last blunt, she continued her regular activity of watching sitcoms. When a commercial would come on, I would ask her simple questions like what happened before the show went to a commercial break. Her responses would be macro-answers about what was going on but when I asked her what the main character was wearing, she did not remember. This was ironic because the protagonist wore a bright yellow suit that my friend commenting on earlier when the show began ten minutes ago. Her short-term memory is weakening because she was only able to remember big picture information and not small picture. Though the results are interesting, I know that I would have had different response on someone else because it depends on how often the user smokes and if they have good memory prior to smoking weed.

Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next. This instant change in emotions has to do with the way that THC affects the brain's limbic system. The limbic system is another region of the brain that governs one's behavior and emotions. It also "coordinates activities between the visceral base-brain and the rest of the nervous system."(8) I am now going to use Students B to describe how emotions are affected by marijuana. Students B is an articulate and well spoken young woman who has a troublesome relationship with her best friends which gets her upset and tense up. But after she smoked one high dose weed, her body was relaxed however, she had trouble formulating her thoughts clearly and would talk in pieces and was jubilant. It has been researched that a person needs to have high dose of marijuana would be in the state of euphoria. High dose of marijuana is measured as "15mg of THC can cause increased heart rate, gross motor disturbances, and can lead to panic attacks."(9) Thankfully, Student A did not experience any of these extreme examples.

College students usually smoke marijuana because they are stressed over schoolwork and feel that marijuana can help them unwind. I have encountered marijuana smokers who are chilled and have no worries in the world but after the effect of the drug wears off, they're sometimes capable to tacking their problem or at the original state that they were in before the drug. The effects of happiness that marijuana usually cause to the user is not a lasting effect because even though a user smokes weed to get away from the troubles of his/her own life, they still have to face these problems after the effects of the drug wears-off. In a survey with college student, an organization called, parents: the Anti-Drug interviewed college students and found that "compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention."(10) This was evident through my second experiment with Student B but not everyone who smoke high doses of marijuana experience the same affect.

The chemicals in marijuana bring cognitive impairment and troubles with learning for the user. "Smoking [marijuana] causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused but cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Some researchers believe that has changes may put a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs such a cocaine and heroin."(11) To prevent such harm, one must be cautious of their actions. Those who do not do drugs do not risk harm. So please the next day you light up, remember you that you central nervous system and brain will be at risk.

I smoked pot straight now since I was 13 years old Im 25 now I smoke it everyday literally through a Bong. I do not smoke well im at work but as soon as im off and for the remainder of the evening till I end up going to bed I do smoke. Now I read your page about the effects pot has on short term memory and brain function, Since I started smoking pot my asthma has vanished my grades went up in school my mind learns at quicker rates and my short term memory is far from gone There isnt much I forget about, unless it is because of my selective memory. Were the people that you tested on already marijuana smokers and also there are diff things to be taken into consideration when testing a substance for example the way it was grown marijuana has to be grown with nutrients and fertalizers to become potent enough to smoke for a high but when people use these fertilizers and such they sometimes do not leech the foods out from the plants which could lead to all kinds of bad side effects Im wondering if this kind of inforamtion is taken into consideration when giving test subjects marijuana to smoke or ingest.

I have no side effects other than a burnt out feeling after smoking all nite, and in teh morning of course but no brain problems like teh ones your website describes ... Chris, 7 July 2006

Yeah...i disagree on a lot of things that you have to say about this. Like for one some of the things you mentioned only happen while you're high, but after the high goes away those things do as well. Marijuana is not addicting like other hard drugs or alcohol. Also marijuana helps people with ADD, makes them focus better, and sometimes learn better. Sometimes when you smoke your nerves are more dull, but sometimes they can be more alive, so to speak. You need to know that everybody reacts to marijuana differently. So these test that your doing don't go for everybody. You need to let people know that or else thats kind of false information. Something that really got to me is when you were talking about how people do it to relax and get their mind of things and once the highs gone all the problems come back. Well once again everybody reacts differently to marijuana. A lot of people when there high talk a lot about there problems and life in general. What I'm getting at here is that while their high they can figure out there problems because being high brings you into a new type of world and you think about everything more carefully. It's like it opens up your brain and lets you think more into your thoughts and about whats going on. A lot of times they can solve their problems like that, especially when there is someone there with them to talk to. Marijuana also brings people together. I know someone who hated a bunch of people, but then one day ended up smoking with them. Next thing she knew, they were all the best of friends. I know a group of people and within that group you've got your "gangster" type, Punk type, goth type, preppy type, hick type, and the list just keeps going. All of them probably wouldn't even talk if it wasn't for marijuana bringing them together. I have a lot more to say but, I'm not going to because I have pretty much proved my point. Also marijuana brings the creativeness out in people. Some of the greatest authors, poets, music artist, painters, and so on, get their great ideas or create there masterpieces by being high.

P.S I would also like to add that I am a chronic user and I could remember your whole entire report on it. I also have excellent grades in school, in fact better than when I didn't smoke. I also would just like to add one more thing: You will not understand or ever be able to know how or what marijuana does to you unless you do it yourself. Trust me I once was all anti-marijuana and always said that it does all these bad things to you and blah blah blah. Well now I actually know how it really does make people feel because I have experienced it and everything there is in that type of world.

P.S.S I do agree with a few things that you had to say ... Jen, 9 November 2006

Hi, I really found this information very useful because it IS a misconvention among most of the college/university goers that marijuana increases concentration and increases the work capacity of an individual. I personally believe that it DOES increase the work capacity of the abuser to some extent, that's when the drug abuser is not in a "stoned" state of mind, but then too, what is at stake is the brain and central nervous system malfunctioning, which degrades the intellectual, job and social skills. So in my opinion, it's not a good deal ... Ankur Gupta, 25 February 2007

allright tell me something if you say a list of say 20-30 vocabulary words and you were asked to read them over, then you were asked say 5 minutes later to remember as many of those words as you can, do you really think you'll be able to do that? no i bet if you asked 100 people to do that that around 90% of them wouldnt be able to do it.

also riddle me this batman, how many people die each year from drunk driving accidents? now dont im pretty sure you've been drunk, and maybe once smoked pot in your life right? well which had a more sever affect the weed or the alcohol? yeah the alcohol!

im a stoner i will proudly say that. but if i have the choice between alcohol and weed i'd take weed anyday. i've driven high that isnt a problem. when im high i drive a little slower then normal and im lookin for the nearest 7-11.

weed isnt a drug it has no addictive characteristics what so ever!!! ciggaretes kill more people then alchol, guns, and pissed off husbands who come home early.

now weed doesnt lead to other drugs what so ever, i've been smokin the stuff everyday for the past 4 years and i have yet to even think about trying other drugs. if mother nature didnt want us to smoke it she wouldnt have put it here!

its as simple as that!! ... Reader on the web, 21 July 2007

Hello, I was told about this site as a friend of mine was completing a research paper. As I looked over it, there seems to be lots of misinformation involved, and my friend has abandoned this site. I wouldn't mind if you read through all of my message carefully. To start off, the following statement is not backed by any scientific evidence what so ever. "Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons." This has been proven to be false on multiple occasions since the 1970's. Cannabinoids to not not impinge on the nervous system what so ever, this isn't lysergic acid we're dealing with. "Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids" This quote right here is misleading. Every plant is comprised of hundreds of chemicals. In fact, they're not even chemicals, they're just substances that comprise the plants' structure. Also, the majority of cannabinoids that are also found in cannabis are produced by the body naturally. Also regarding cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters." This is simply false, I do not know where this source came from. Your brain does not use cannabinoid receptors for memory, thought, or concentration. Next, saying that "When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered." is also blatantly false. Marijuana does not directly impact memory, but short term memory only when high off of THC or CBD is affected because the user may be 'distracted' if you will from the plant it self. Also, referring to a 'high dose' of marijuana is ridiculous. There is no such thing as a high dose of Cannabis because there is no possible way to overdose. It is strictly impossible. The most obnoxious quote that i've read from this site is, "Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next." I cannot believe that this would even be published. MARIJUANA DOES NOT CHANGE A USERS STATE OF MIND. PEOPLE CAN MAKE THE SAME RATIONAL DECISIONS AS THEY WOULD WHEN NOT USING THE PLANT. PERIOD. I am actually appalled by what I've read here, and I'm even more appalled by the sources you've used. Unlike true informational sites, you've only used web sources. That is completely absurd. If you look at any reasonable fact site about Cannabis you will see that the sources that are used are mainly from published books and factual citations. Please realize that much of what is on this web page is completely false and misleading. I wouldn't mind hearing a response soon to defend your case ... Spiros Thomas, 7 November 2007

Weed is not cool's picture

Your an idiot if you think

Your an idiot if you think that pot doesn’t do damage. I was a very heavy user, as soon as I got up I had to have it before work after work sometimes I would drive home in my lunch brake for a chop. And if I didn’t have the money I would steel my loved ones things to pawn in to buy bud. I was on a downward slope, spending hundreds of dollars a week on the shit, and I aint talking about the bottom of the bag cap covering up all the seeds and stem, like the shit half you dickheads are smoking. You say its cool to get stoned, pot is great it makes you feel alive,(YOU MORE F****D UP THAN I AM) a you say that it doesn’t cause death how about the people that get so depression and paranoia so they commit Suicide just Cause its not a hard drug(coke, amphetamines, heroin) doesn’t mean that it can’t kill you. This is for you Dillon Brafford you read a lot about the affects of (Marijuana, grass, pot, bud, weed, green, Cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol) look; I can paste big words too. I bet you have never been stone, like really stoned, smoke till you sleep. Pot does cause brain damage, especially long term damage. I now find it hard to spell simple words, my memory isn’t that good. I suffer from depressions and I have tried antidepressant Zoloft but it didn’t help me. I get paranoid and anxiety when I am around crowds, I feel like everyone is coming to get me. I get angry very easily and I have lost friends because of my addiction and change in personality. My partner finds it difficult when I mood swing/get depressed. But she has been with me every step of the way and is still there for me when I need help. Please listen to me: Weed is not cool, Weed is not good – it will slowly and surely destroy your life! Stop before it is too late.

When i get paranoid smoking I know! its because of smoking?
So how high of consciousness level do you have? since youre unable to choose the emotions you like of cannabis.

marijuana addiction

i am a stoner. i smoke 3+ joints a day which equates to almost exactly one ounce of cannabis a week. i have always had bad human relations. so its hard to see cannabis making them any worse. i quit cannabis when i was 39 and restarted it at 62. i am hooked. i am an addict. i have that nausea and without reading i knew it was cannabis withdrawal. i see there is a spell checker comes with this venue. however words that can be used interchangably like their and there are often used improperly here. i could never type but i can sort of spell. cannabis didnt touch that. i dont use upper case becuase i am not a typist and i routinely spell becuase wrong and dont bother to correct it. dont use apostrophes or commas either. that's either becuase i cannot be bothered to type right. i am a dope head remember. i have never liked rules or authority. i have been in trouble with the law all my life but dope had little to do with it in the early years. its no doubt a factor in later years. a man who claims to be an engineering student and uses witch for which hardly comforting. i can hardly wait until he or she builds me an appollo type launch vehicle. results should be really exciting. i am 66 years old and i have to give it up and i dont want too! i love it. i always couldnt remember stuff. i lost stuff all the time. find it later. my hands and brain sometimes just are not connected. cannabis makes it worse i guess. i am off to suck down a little homemade hash. i discovered how to harvest the hash by accident.

Historical Constraint In a Modern World

Weed, when produced in your backyard is a VICTIMLESS CRIME!
Alcohol is a GATEWAY DRUG
& the MAJORITY of most westernised citizens have had a toke.
The LAW does not decide what is good for me!

With this said, marijuana should be treated like every other commodity = In moderation!

I dont drink but spark up when I feel like a quiet night in.
Have done for 9 years and have completed a masters in modern psych and policy & research. Its a shame that a few abusers vilify the entire culture (the same is seen in any other 'unsocial' behavior)

I DO HOWEVER take a break everynow and then when I feel the need to.

Make your own choice and know what is good for you.

Dont Be Discouraged's picture

Hey, I found this site while

Hey, I found this site while doing a research paper against the legalization of pot. I read through some of the comments and I just have to say, dont be discouraged. Most people who write on this are complete pot heads who would stop at nothing to bring down anything saying pot is bad.

I used to smoke pot, not regularly but occasionally, and i did find myself missing a lot of classes and my gpa went to hell. luckily i caught myself before it got too late. im seeing a lot of people around me smoke pot every day of the week. their mentality is "fuck homework, lets get high" and that isnt the right mentality of it.

This info was helpful to my paper. Thanks.

I think it is funny how some

I think it is funny how some of the responses try to make marijuana seem like a natural solution to euphoria. The arguments made about being more productive when smoking weed is rediculous and kind of sad. What this really means is the abuser lacks a natural chemical in his body where it has the inability to feel happy or euphoric. (No one should feel euphoric all of the time). Thus the abuser is self medicating. Why not see your PCP and correct whatever is wrong in a safe way. It is purely asinine to ignore research that projects negative consequences of marijuana use. You don't know (have you researched it) and you think he does not know, why take a chance?

Whatever....

Been smoking pot since I was 13.... I'm 45 now. I have been nothing less than successful. Family, friends, career... life has been good. I started a new business 6 months ago, I'm busier than ever and I'm making tons of money... and no.. I don't deal drugs..lol. I am a Software Developer (actually more than that, I've been working with computers since 1981, systems analyst, administrator, PC tech, instructor, etc.. done it all).. now I develop websites and host them too. I love to get high... and I wont ever stop. My mind is clear, my memory is excellent, and.... damn I forgot! LOL!!! JUST KIDDING! Anyway, I do realize it effects people differently, and for some, it leads to harder drugs.... sure I tried many as a young adult, but I can say today... I'm not a drinker, pill popper, snorter, just a proud pot smoker!

You can find books and articles and sites on how marijuana helps the body. People like you only look at the bad side of marijuana when in truth the good side overcomes it. I believe that everyone should be free do what makes them happy so long as it doesn't negativley affect the people surrounding them, because as far as I know we only have one life to live on this beautiful Earth of ours, and people like lawmakers and doctors should be smart enough by now to know right from wrong. To my understanding, the American Declaration of Independence states that every American citizen has the right to "life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness"..Isn't freedom what America is all about?

How does marijuana effect the brain?

I liked the "Think out of the box" "Wow" and "Ha" comments.....I think the articile was very well written, with sufficient research. Most assuredly the author understands that the pot smoker is already "addicted". The facts are that THEY are not willing to admit it.

If a student can accomplish a's and b's while under the influence of pot....think what this person might accomplish "out" of the influence.

If a person, any person, is truly happy and content with "who" they are, they perhaps wouldn't see the need for any chemical that alters the brain function. I would venture to say that they are focused on their own little world, self serving, and marijuana inhances that self serving attitude.

When is the last time you helped the poor, stacked wood for a neighbor, checked in to see what your parent could use a hand with, helped clean a beach, or rescued an animal, etc.

What together person defends a habit with words like; ie: FKin, idiots, crap etc. I have noticed some of the users can barely express themselves, can't spell, uses profanity to explain themselves, uses poorly constructed arguments, defends the habit venomently, and actually believes their life is OK!

What about the people around you? Do they think you are functioning OK? What kind of an influence are you on the younger people in your life? Are you truely happy or do you even know how that feels? Let me guess, you don't
give a c---.

Yes you can live your life how you choose, but as one person said, (a user) "you only live once"...maybe you should seriously consider the truth in that statement and consider that research may know more than you.

There are much more important concerns than pot smoking on the near horizon...better be clear minded to face the future as we continue to loose our civil liberties, spiral into financial ruin of what was the greatest country in the world, be a Godless nation. We are all so focused on our "habits" and distraced by, sports, games, vices, sex, drugs and rock and roll that the "elite" are taking our country right out from under our noses. We may all be pathetic little worker bee's that help the rich daily. Kick the habits, clear your minds and be a part of solutions instead of your drug induced "cop out". Be SOMEONE. Check Alex Jones website. Get INVOVLED with something WORTHWHILE! FOCUS on OTHERS instead of your "high" GET a HOBBY! GET a LIFE!!!!!!!

Seriously? If you smoked pot

Seriously? If you smoked pot at all, you would understand that these things come into mind very often while high. Getting high doesn't make you smarter. It doesn't make you stupid. It's refreshing. For me, when I get high, I can look at my life and the world around me more objectively. I see what's actually going on around me, and, whether I appreciate it or not, I make sense of it. For people that have a difficult time concentrating or have problems with anxiety, I would definitely recommend trying pot out. You learn what it's really like to think clearly.

However, if you're not intelligent, pot is probably not good for youn. Unless taken with a bunch of caffeine or another upper, pot will definitely slow down your mind. It may help you get to work, but if you're already a slow thinker, I definitely would stay away from it.

All in all, pot refines my logical thinking process. Through the use of pot, I've become a more logical thinker, which is very beneficial for the mathematical and physical subjects I am pursuing.

As for all of this political stuff, with the rich slowly controlling the poor and all, it's always happened. You talk about "habits," as if pot is one of these; but the real bad habits are the sports, games, and entertainment, or what you call "distractions." All of this mindless entertainment is what is plaguing the world, subtly tossing in ideas of violence, mixed with teamwork (military), and sacrificing personal gains for the group.

Pot is a thought-provoking substance. A lot of people don't like pot. I've found that a lot of these people are pretty unintelligent or narrow-minded for the most part. The people who join these mindless wars and vote for them whole-heartedly are generally the ones who refuse to smoke pot while being lobbied by alcohol and tobacco companies.

For marijuana's mental effects, I'd direct your attention to a study done on rats, showing that low doses improved memory, harvard research showing that light users and past hard users gain more IQ than non-users. And for physical effects, harvard research showing that THC can half the size of a lung tumor.

Although I agree with your ideas about the world, clearmind, I can safely disagree with your idea that pot is another cause for this. And as for furthering your conspiracy theory, I feel that pot and lsd and similar "mind-expanding" drugs are kept illegal simply because they let people see the world as it actually is and forget about the boundaries that have been pressed into their brain the day they were born (but that don't actually exist). If everyone had a sudden realization that the government no longer worked for the people, wouldn't the government lose all of its power?

Thanks for the ignorant post. Try pot at least once.

response to clear mind

you have obviously never smoked weed before if you think you have a legitimate argument against this.....

you don't think people can be productive members in society and smoke, your ridiculous for thinking that some one wont actively help a neighbor, a friend, or your own parents if they smoke a plant....

and if you didn't read those comment thoroughly enough it states that his grades went up from smoking weed which means without the drug why would there grades go up and why does that mean he could accomplish anything more if anything it means they could accomplish less

if you think that people that smoke weed are addicted and dont have their own life your fuckin stupid their doing something they like and it has positive effects that you overlooked through out your entire piece.

Some of the most sucessful people in the world smoke weed, and the nicest most responsible people i have ever met smoke weed

people like you make me sick this country is not being ruined by this drug its being saved by it

your in no position to give people advice on this topic cause what you have said is complete bullshit, people are not addicted because they use weed and defend it they just see the true good that comes out of it...

Really, I can't believe what

Really, I can't believe what I am reading. Do you really think that marijuana has properties that can help a person make better grades? Really? Are you defending a drug that is legal and harmful. Do you have children? what would you say if you saw a ten year old smoking weed? Would you congratulate him or would you rush to save him and knock the blunt out of his hand. After all, if weed makes people so productive why not give a ten-year-old weed for his ADD. I'll tell you why because you are probably still defending the weed at the price of our future generation. You don't know how it will effect that boy. There are more than just side effects that goes along with drug use. The environment, the criminal acts, the addictive quality, the time spent away from family either trying to hide it from them or trying to obtain it. There has to be more to life than getting high. I feel sorry for you that you have to self medicate to feel alive. You know there are other ways to obtain this feeling.

The first problem with this

The first problem with this report is that it contains entirely works cited from internet-based sources.

The second problem with this report is that there is no control group for the studies you are discussing.

The third problem with this report is that the vast majority of peer-reviewed medical journals would disagree with your hypothesis.

I sustained a 4.0 Grade Point Average while smoking marijuana in college. While marijuana may inhibit short term memory slightly while under its effects and for a short time after use and - this is key - absolutely impermanently, a legal drug such as alcohol is empirically known to destroy brain cells completely, has an addiction rate over three times as high as marijuana, and can be deadly in high enough doses.

The original prohibition of marijuana is a result of racism by lawmakers against Mexicans who were flooding into Texas in the early 1900s. Any historian familiar with what I've said will nod their head in agreement. It is my assumption that laws have yet to change both because of the danger legalization presents to certain industries (pharmaceutical and opium included - we are the largest consumers of opium-based products in the world - percocet, vicodin, morpheine, etc.) and others as noted below, as well as the unwillingness for lawmakers, politicians and government anti-advocates to admit they have lied and are absolutely, unequivocally wrong in their assessment of the drug and continued incarceration of marijuana users (which is a more harmful side effect than any of the small negative health affects by comparison, I might add.)

Hemp was a requirement by law to be grown in the history of our country - George Washington grew hemp - the Declaration of Independence is made of hemp paper. Hemp continues to be illegal to grow in the United States because it would jeopardize big business in lumber, energy, paper, and numerous other industries (it is a completely renewable and easily grown source of an astronomical number of things.)

You want my sources? Noam Chomsky has talked about the defunct Drug Policy in this country. Canada has decriminalized and in some cases legalized marijuana to no ill-effect to their populace. Switzerland has legalized marijuana completely and they noticed a drop in their crime rate as a result. Amsterdam has legalized marijuana and a number of other drugs, and as a result, has become a major tourist attraction for many people around the world who otherwise can not use these drugs safely or legally.

The continued hard-line attitude of the government and propaganda groups such as NIDA only serves to justify a rising population of individuals who know they are being duped and are very unhappy about it. It is only a matter of time before people begin to get civilly disobient, and then the government will have no choice but to meet their demands.

Once again, there is not a single empirical, peer-reviewed scientific journal that would tell you marijuana is somehow magically more dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. You have to be intelligent enough to look in the right places for your information or you will continue to believe lies fed straight to your face.

Thinking outside the box.

I have been smoking pot since i was 13 years old, and now i'm almost 19. First time i did it, it was a horrible high. I was nervous, i thought i was going to die. Sometimes i would go from laughing really hard to being really scared ("Oh my God! The cops!") in a split second. It made me act really weird. It also made me miss out on a lot of things like getting good grades and having a girl friend.
I say weed made me miss out because when i would notice everyone around me getting good grades and finding girlfriends, it would bother me, and instead of going out and doing these things i just told my innervoices to shut up by smoking every other day for six years.
If you are reading this and thinking about smoking i would tell you not to. Smoking would probably make you relaxed, but one day you will wake up and realized that six years have gone by and you are the same, scared-shittless, little thirteen year old boy you were before you started.

drop the blunt, and grow up.

"Thinking outside the box"

Wow....for a moment I thought that I had written this post. It has so much in common with my own experience with Cannabis it is kind of scary. My first experience with weed was a very bad one, I was tripping really bad (at school!) I thought for a second that I was Silvester Stallone, my legs wouldn't move properly and I was really really paranoid. I've never held proper relationships, I've always been sitting behind my computer playing games. I used to a really outgoing person, a real happy kid. I have become really depressed (not due to life's problems!) and have lost my self esteem. PLEASE UNDERSTAND: Marijuana is not for everyone, just like alcohol is not for everyone. yes it DOES kill, but there are millions of people who drink RESPONSIBLY, and do not have issues.

I strongly agree with the user's who say "use it in moderation" go drink about 3-4 cups of coffee a day for a month, and then try to stop. Its only because YOU have formed a bad habit. YES, it does make you relaxed, it does make you creative (well some people) but in general, if you are a lazy person and you smoke weed, it can make you more of a lazy person. NO one can tell you the EXACT side effects, or long term effects, there is no "one size fits all" with Cannabis. IF you think that you must try it, DO NOT smoke alone, make sure you are with some one responsible and mature that has experience. Some people do stupid things when high, some people trip out, some people laugh non stop (which can be very very irritating when your high yourself) But all in all, no one can tell you the exact outcome with every person.

Some of you may have come across this quote before: "What hashish gives with one hand it takes away with the other: that is to say, it gives the power of imagination and takes away the ability to profit by it." Baudelaire (1860)

In my opinion and no one else, this quote is dead accurate.
It can give you creative thoughts, but at the end, it will take both. Think about it! YES it is your choice, so make it wisely dudes.

I neeeeed weed to function

I'm 16 and the first time I smoked pot I was about 12 I've been smoking almost everyday for the past 2 years and I'd like to start off by saying there have been some valid points and some Wack shit I will have to say I've tried a variety of drugs (x shrooms an assortment of pills lean alcohol and of coarse pot) I have to say pot is the best I will no longer fuck with chemicals and shit just shrooms and pot as for side effects sometimes I'm short of breath which is why I got a vape also I'm more testy when I'm not high I'm in all advanced classes and have a 4.6 gpa in no way has pot affected my grades I will continue to smoke/vape/ingest pot because it's the only way I can maintain. In the end I think even if smoking is really bad for you....fuck it there's plenty way worse shit out there that will kill you way faster....so smoke on

I smoke pot, but you all have it wrong. This is Josh Beyler (a.k.a Jay Bay the Potatocreekian) and I firmly believe that pot does no harm to you. Meth dosen't either. I am currently a freshman at Harvard University and maintain a 3.98 GPA while under the influence of these substances. I also tripped out so bad that I had sex with a underage girl. This has nothing to do with the drugs I was taking, I just think this happened naturally. Pot does nothing to you, which is exactly why my friends and I turned to meth. Soooo much better. I can do better ollies too.

i never smoked until a few

i never smoked until a few weeks ago because i thought it was horrible and i was going to become stupid after one time... I was wrong, i have severe prostate problems and i smoked for an entire week. felt great. i had nothing but endorphins rushing through my body, so my school work didnt interest me. i got stupid from it, then it faded off and i was back to normal. As far as the short term memory shit, when i got ripped, i didnt know what the hell i was talking about, but the next nite i smoked, i remembered everything i talked about that nite.... Study high, take the test high... the brain works in odd ways.

This is horrible

To me, this is an alarmingly skewed and misguided summary of the effects, functions, and perils associated with marijuana. In the end I was left contemplating whether you intentionally warped the facts to meld with your personal opinion on marijuana, or you simply have no clue what you are talking about. My advice - scrap this essay, conduct an extensive google search, and bask in the sweet fragrance of enlightenment.

I have questions

ok, well i have a couple of questions on this subject. First of all, I am new to weed, I am 18 and in my freshman year of college at UT in Austin, and my roommate got me into smoking weed. When we smoke I have a lot of fun, and I feel good, but I do eventually get really tired, which is kind of annoying. But the thing for me is that I have had little to no motivation to go to class lately, and I have been failing 2 of my classes, and I feel like this is possibly due to the introduction of weed into my life. However i was told recently by another friend of mine that there are 2 different main strands of weed: Sativa and Indica; and i was told that Sativa is a type that gets you more "high", unlike Indica which is more likely to get you "stoned". My main question is does anyone think that that could be the cause of different effects on different people? It's not necessarily their specific reaction to weed in general, but their reaction to a certain type of weed. Because when I smoke I always feel groggy after, and extremely unproductive, there have been countless times when my roommate and I have made a list of things to do before smoking, and forgot about the list right after we have smoked. So my thought is that we have been smoking Indica which gets us "stoned" rather than high and tends to make us unproductive.

If I could just get some feedback on this that would be great, try not to tear me apart, I have nothing against weed, matter of fact I love it! I would just like to hear some other ideas on it. Thanks.

Hi! I just want to say that I

Hi!

I just want to say that I know your pain; I used to smoke more often last year, and I noticed that my grades this year a slightly better. I was averaging at about a 2.9 GPA last year, and this year it has got to be above a 3. I was only a weekly user. But you do lose motivation mainly because even if you think you'll get stuff done after it wears off, it makes you PROFOUNDLY tired. Sometimes, I'd have trouble even getting up to do something (all when the effects wear off). So I'd delude myself into thinking I could get a certain thing done later, but I never would because I was just too tired. Mind you, I was only a weekly smoker (I live at home so it was hard even to get that weekly joint in). But yes. I think it had some kind of a VERY subtle effect on my academics. HOWEVER, I loved it! And what it messed up in academics it definitely helped in creativity.
But I'd advise you to stop smoking everyday, if that's the case. It is most likely the marijuana that is making you fail your classes. Don't stop! Just use better judgment; cut down to once a week when you don't have anything to do.

i have much to say on this

i have much to say on this topic. first off i agree with many others who question whether or not the author of this article , has actually tried smoking pot. what better resource to use for such a controversial topic than yourself? how do you expect to soundly argue your view when you have not experienced weed for yourself? you are telling the millions who read this 'report' arguments that you have quoted from websites. this brings me to another point. while in school i was an avid stoner. however i managed to learn something crucial when it comes to writing reports. generally when formulating a respectable report, you should not use websites ending in '.com'. the reasoning behind this is because websites ending with .com can easily be edited or added to by whom ever deems it necessary. for future reference use something from .org
also i am understanding enough to believe that pot, weed, marijuana, or green have different effects on different individuals. however here is the effect it had on me....
my junior year of high school i was having a seriously dis-functional family. having an older brother who dropped out of school and run away yet again for the fifth time. my family put so much pressure on me the youngest not to turn out like him. i tried so hard for the longest time to prove to my parents that i was not like my brother. i was my own individual. it soon became very stressful to cope with. i also had a job that i was working as often as possible to save up for college and my own vehicle. on top of all that i had to deal with over bearing paranoid parents. i looked to pot. that was my escape. it seemed to do the job. no matter what home was like, how shitty work was, or how crazy school was. these things didnt seem to matter. granted, smoking didnt make the problems go away. they were still there for me to deal with. however, smoking pot has never seemed to have any effect of depressing an individual. if anything it is an emotional boost. i say this because i know that personally, smoking marijuana has "impaired" me to believe that there is a way. that there is a light along the way of that dark street we call life. to cut the story down a bit i want to say that i am now married and no longer smoke pot. i honestly regret this... i might have quite toking up. i have begun a much worst and detrimental habit. smoking cigarettes. it is worse in the since that it has a shit load of tar and also inflates your lungs. not to mention it is an unattractive habit. smoking cigarettes is also less calming nor is it therapeutic. did i mention that now to get myself through the day i am at a pack a day as to were with pot a blunt a day makes the day okay.
and my last thing. someone mentioned earlier in a comment. 'if you are for pot, then why search the risks of marijuana?" not all stoners are complete dumbasses. first off the intelligent person would argue that they are aware that everything has a risks and on a daily bases scientific breakthroughs are being made. and my second point is that in finding this website i simply keyed 'marijuana" it isnt a stoners fault that the general population as a whole is against toking up.
please for future reference dont knock it until you try it. i would have thought that your mother taught you that. and that wasnt intended as a your mamma joke nor an insult.
-dmg-
p.s. out of curiosity, why are you against marijuana use? is it because it is illegal or are you against it for medical reasons? if it is for medical reasons, do you smoke, drink alcohol, operate machinery while on cold medicine, use microwaves, talk on a cellular device, or go in direct sunlight without skin care products? if not i would like to know when you are going to post a research paper on the digression of american society and the rising concerns of medical risks in day to day lives.
thank you for your time.

We need the truth to make our own informed decisions

This whole debate is triggered by the fact that the marijuana PLANT has been victimised and scapegoated by the powers that be since forever. Yes, it is a drug. Any substance that alters our state of mind can be classed as a drug, whether it be heroine, cocaine, alcohol, nicotine in tobacco or even caffeine in coffee. There may be some side effects (for one, inhaling any form of smoke is never gonna be good for you) but I think the positives outweigh the negatives and the negatives are certainly less severe than those associated with alcohol and tobacco.
Anyone who has ever smoked cannabis will know how creative, philosophical and open-minded it allows you to be. This is one of the main reasons it has been lied about for years in the media and in governmental propaganda. The government sends out misinformation knowing the gullable public will believe whatever it is told, forcing us to look elsewhere (like this site) for the truth. The authorities want an obedient population filled with hatred for another. They want us the people to go to work and do our mindless jobs everyday, go home, keep our heads down and not question the way the world is run. They encourage the consumption of alcohol as it makes many people stupid and aggressive but they discourage the use of marijuana as it makes people peaceful and thoughtful. Thoughtful, peaceful people don't help their potential for wars and arms trades where lots of MONEY is to be made.
I'd like to see some reliable, in-depth research take place on marijuana and an honest, truthful, complete and accurate report produced to the public so we can make our own minds up about the subject. We don't need to be told what we can and can't do by someone else, we just need the facts. I'd like to think that as long as we know the complete truth about something we're intelligent enough to make our own INFORMED decisions.
I smoke marijuana and haven't had any really noticeable side effects so far so I'm going to keep on doing it until someone can provide me with hard proof that I have a reason to stop.

yo Will

I agree with you on some stuff. The government screws people every day of their lives. people grow up work consume and die. They keep marijuana illegal because they can't tax it. its all about control money and power. We all know that power corrupts and that rules are made to be broken. I say use it don't abuse it. It's not for everyone. If it affects your daily life then cut back. If it makes you happy and helps you deal with the stressors in everyday life then toke up. Everyone needs an escape, whether it's exercise, food, cigarettes, TV, or some other mind altering substance. If everyone smoked weed, guaranteed there would be peace not greed. The government does not want you to think. They want you to sleep. America is a dumbass country. I am 21 years old and have been smoking for 3 years now. I feel that it has affected my short term memory but fuck, no one's perfect. Were all gonna die. Might as well enjoy the time we have hear and enjoy the tools we were given. peace and love

weed

i smoke weed alot, i have adhd, im manically depressed, and im bi-polar. i was every young the frist time i tryed to commit suicide.... like 13. i was to scared to tell my parents, so i told a close friend of my (who was a huge pot head at the time), he suggested that he gets me high for the first time cause i was very hyper and shaking, hyperventilating, and talking very fast. so i agreed and we went back to his house and sat on the couch in his room and smoked. i went from seeing my entire life in a negative light, to seeing my life for what it was really worth. i enjoyed everyday alot more and everything was more beautiful, years later i decided to quit smoking the ganja. and before i knew it i was back to my same old ways..... but this time it was worse, i was cutting myself very deeply, i had to go to a hospital for two weeks, i was having anger spouts, and i was alot more violent. this went on for about 9 months of me not smoking and my and a few friends decided to smoke again, i felt amazing again. i quit again and the same thing happened, i started again and now im 19 years old and i look back on my life and where im at today and im amazed. my grades we always good, top in my class, my depression cleared up, my bi polar was good, no anger, and i didnt want to punch anything. i didnt want to hurt my self or anyone else in fact i wanted to make peace with more people then ever. i started caring about myself and everyone else alot more. and today im a fire fighter, a mangier in a factory, and i smoke pot everyday. i relax and think more clearly. i agree there may be a few down sides to marijuana but what isnt there a down side to. look at the good before you judge the bad. thank you for reading, keep in contact with me

ITS ALL IN THE HEAD... READ

Ok, i am a senior in high school this year (17 years old almost 18) and i have been smoking reef for about 5 months straight now- Every day. But, to start off, i must say that if you have never smoked pot, your inquiry is useless to me, and to all. Because its simply a judgement. Prior to smoking pot, i was the kid that would judge anyone who hit it because i was raised to stay away from it because its "trouble". AND I REGRET THAT. Every step you make in school, you see.. "say no to drugs" on rugs, walls, etc. But one day an inner "me" said im gunna try it... I tried it and it was no big deal..

THE ONLY EFFECTs of marijuana (FOR ME!) are:... POSITIVE- a lot of inspiration, physically healthy- went from slighlty overweight to six pack, and my visions of my future are crazy and i have this sense of feeling where success is inevitable, grades went up, Just received my First term and its straight A's ..NEGATIVE- the ONLY negative is that it has SLIGHTLY affected my short term memory but nothing outragous or else i wouldnt be doing it.. For example, every once in a while i will set my keys somewhere and 5 seconds later completly forgot where i put them.. BUT like i said it is ocassionally. . Read FROM NOW UNDER ONLY IF YOU WANT TO.
But i must not leave out a big picture (which is the reason marijuana has mostly affected me positivly).
I live my life by an inspirational movie i watched in psychology class a few years ago called "The Secret" it shows how literally anything you want in life you can have if you just beleive it.. And it has changed my life amazingly.. I went from your average guy.. to something very unaverage... When you understand the secret, things that dont happen normally.. happen.. AS long as YOU want them to.. ill give you an example. one of the many that happen to me every day... So, like i said im 17 years old, and as i was about to turn 16 i was expecting to get a 3 thousand dollar car like my other 2 sisters did... But i really wanted a nissan 350z.. I visioned myself in it.. Felt the wheel, heard my music terrorizing the streets.. But anyway, when i found my 3 thousad dollar car i wanted (1996 canaro) my mom said these words.. You know andrew, you really need a good car that wont break down ever, which would be a nissan.. You really dont need anything other than a 2 door.. I said, "mom, do you know what a 350z is". She said no, so i went on autotrader that night found a 350z with custom rims the DAY BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY and we got it the next day on my birthday. YES, my mom has money but she would never do something like this!!! She is the kind that wont let the family get something to drink at resturants other than water for example.. (VERY SMART WITH MONEY). She also said, if you get a ticket or wreck it, your screwed. TOO BAD. almost 2 years later.. no ticket. no wreck.. HOW DO I KNOW ITS THE "SECRET" AND NOT A COINCIDENCE? WELL, coincidences happen rarely, not every day. Things crazy like this happen to me all the time and its honestly the craziest thing i have EVER experienced.. If this sounds like some kid bull shitting i have all the proof. I wouldnt waste my time.I can go all day long telling you all the things that happen like this.. I said all that because it has honestly moved me and i encourage all to check it out on youtube.. just type in.. the secret 1st 20 minutes.. I am so glad i did.. Every time i personally give my life story, i come to find i have multiple people listening and hungry for what i have in stock...Its amazing how the world responds to your 100% positive actions.. And actually, this girl i have liked for a while ( dating our quarter back) told me about a crazy dream she had about me driving around in my car. and the reason she had that dream.. is because every time i am around her (have a class with her) i think in my head about taking her on a date and being with her, and when you know the secret, you subconsciously do the right things at the right time which allow things to work out for you in the long run.. EVER SINCE THAT MOVIE. i havent had a problem (literally) and i have everything going for me.

NOTE: the "secret" has done amazing things for me, but i also live my life believing in the bible and that Jesus Christ died on the cross to save me for my sins.( thats just me) . You can judge me and call me a hypocrite, but its beyond you. Yes, i smoke pot.. but the only real thing it has done for me is inspire me, pursues me to take action in whatever i do, and has just completly changed my aspect on life and the way i look at the world.

I realize i got off topic, but i have this inspiration that i feel like telling the world.. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH POT.. simply stay away from it.. BUT i encourage you to always get to know somebody and if that person smokes pot, dont let that keep you from getting to know them.. You never know what you might be missing out on.

We're the answers

Has anyone thought that perhaps some of the paranoia is spurred by the fact that marijuana is not legal in many places?

I believe that environmental factors play a big part in how marijuana can affect some people. There are many different types of personalities amongst people and I think that if marijuana isn't something that works for you, then you should avoid it - Just like coffee, tea, Sega or whatever gets your goat. Everything in moderation, even excess. Marijuana is a drug and is deliciously habit forming, just like anything you can take (like that fifth slice of pizza). It is all about what you get out of it.

If your life is less than manageable because of it - Or you're underachieving, treat yourself to managing and achieving. You can start by legalizing the stuff, or simply by putting a better face on society's perception of marijuana lovers. You'll forget all this in five minutes, so no worries, be happy!

Absolutely disables U when it comes to learning complex behavior

I play Flamenco Guitar
I learned a very complex Falseta at 4 PM
I played it about 30 times & it sounded great & i had it down
at 9 PM I tried to recall that same Falseta, its like I have never heard it ! it is completely gone & forgotten very frustrating & disturbing!!!
I even looked at the notes, NOTHING !!!!

If you really want to find out if it effects you or not, try to learn something complex, Not the normal daily routine where your body & mind are in automatic pilot ...

if you play music learn a new peace play it & put your instrument aside & try to remember it 4 hours later

if you like Math, learn a new formula.. solve a few problems then set it aside for a few hours & come back to it .. I promise you'll have a problem trying to remember

if you're learning a new language, learn 10 new words, try to remember the words in 4 hours..

& so on....

I'll be interested to see how it works, as long a you're telling the truth

Off course , I don't really care either way , Just curious !!!!

marijuana

First of all pot is addicting, more so, it's the altered state of mind that people like that is habit forming. rather it be the creativeness, the relaxing, the calming effect, or the motivation it gives some, it's a crutch! those of you " youngens " that dont think so, dont know how the brain works! now dont get me wrong im not against it, i just believe from experience and know that it leads to other drugs, just because it has'nt with you, does'nt mean it has'nt for others. think about it, someone who has never smoked pot before, and then tries it, and likes it because of whatever reason "creativeness" will be ALOT more prone to try another drug, thinking it will do the same for them, as pot did when they first tried it. i know people that go out and buy pot instead of diapers for their kids. if your not addicted to it, then i encourage you to stop for 45 days, and then ask yourself after that! all in all, alot of things are addicting rather we know it or not, rather it be cig's, pot, booze, food, sex, or whatever, acknowledging it can sometimes be difficult because one does'nt want to admit they are not in control of there life! lastly, i believe that pot, and other drugs makes a persons creative side show ALOT more, again, from experience i say this. just look at the music industry, the best of music was from people with buzz's.
